A steadfast imperial stood sentinel in the branches of an ancient oak, the branches twisting round and round until they coalesced into a single perch where he watched the night sky as the distant stars, specks of constant light, started to flicker and draw closer, their luminosity increasing as they blurred transparent as they grew like ethereal gossamer cloaks floating down to the earth. He waited patiently, his long fur seeming to float up to meet them. Antlers curved from his head in ivory sweeps, and a pair of boughs adorned his neck, more luminous and blossomed than those of the oak.He stood as a regal, adorned moon in a forest of discolored stars, stars that came down to greet him.
But as the cloak of illusions fell away, and he startled into a different forest, one much colder and without falling stars, he sighed as he bent over the sleeping dragon curled into an oval. The curled dragon was still, and their chest softly rose and fell in a constant rhythm. He bent over them, brushing his boughs of moon-white flowers over their back.

“Sleep well, handsome. I’ll see you when the sun returns.”
Because the moon was out, and that was when he walked. In the morning, when dawn came as a long-awaited rush of color, his mate would wake. All that he could do now was patrol Noah’s dreams. No harm would come to him while he stood watch, as he was keeper of dreams, able to walk through pools of light and mountains of darkness, anything that dwelt in the recesses of minds that surfaced when the moon coaxed them out. He would make sure none of the darkness came to meet any of the clan. It was something he could do.
The imperial turned and went back through the moonlight filtering through the trees, only to come face to face with a specter as pale and otherworldly as a distant star whose light only just arrived to an eye as soon as it dies. He did not startle, only let out a slow, clouded breath in exasperation.
“I think you know, wanderer, what my business is.” The eidolon of years past did not move in speech, only stood still, the voice reverberating from an unseen mouth, deep and soft. His fur stood on end at the sensation.

“I will not, I’ve said this many times. I am only a messenger of words, a walker who only sees and hears. Nothing more.”
“You are the moon, you have the moon, and yet you only watch.” The specter tilted, its white mass twisting down like a fish changing direction.
“It is all I can do.”
“False.” The voice grated the wrong way.
“What would you rather me do?”
“Act, touch, feel.” The words were drawn out, hissing in his ear.
“I cannot. I will not.” The imperial tried to move through, but the specter only moved with him. He growled. “Go away.”
No response. Suddenly he lunged forward, his wings tensing, but he held back, letting out a slow breath, reeling himself back in.
So he let out a single syllable. “Begone.” And the spirit disappeared.

“Yes: I am a dreamer. For a dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.”

“There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.”
