A few days before they were expected to hatch, one of his clutchmates' eggs was broken open, spilling venom over the remaining three. After hatching, the three were weak and underdeveloped, barely able to move. They grew weaker and weaker by the day, until two of them died. Fearing the creation of an Emperor, his parents left him to die far from home in Water territory.

However, Nightshade did not die.

The hatchling was merely hours from death when he was found by a Light Venomspitter named Aconite, a wandering healer who had been driven out by his last pack . Aconite took Nightshade in, and drained his unborn clutchmate's venom from his body. Though healed, it would take him some time to be well enough to travel, and far longer to fully recover.

During their time living in water territory, Aconite served as a healer for the locals while also teaching Nightshade healing and what he could about being a Night Venomspitter. Nightshade, in addition to learning from Aconite, was taught how to fish and hunt with nets and tridents by the locals. He became quite skilled at it, and even figured out ways to use implement his venom as well.

Everything changed the day Aconite fell ill.

Aconite’s healing was the only true source of income the two dragons had, so Nightshade had to hunt, find a cure, and earn money in order for the two of them to survive. It took a long time, but he managed to find a cure. The only problem: he couldn’t get his claws on the final ingredient: Blood of the Plaguebringer. He left Aconite in the claws of the Water dragons they had befriended, and scoured all of Sornieth for even a drop, traveling anywhere and everywhere at the slightest rumor, until one day, he found solid proof of the Plaguebringer’s blood in the form of the top prize at a gladiator tournament. This wasn’t an ordinary tournament either: it was deathmatches against other dragons. Nightshade trained for several grueling months, learning how to use his nets, trident, and venom for combat in any way possible. Finally, the first day of the tournament arrived. He had hunted down game several times his size before, so dragons couldn’t be that different, right? Wrong.

Nightshade nearly died in that first match, getting his throat torn open so badly that it was a gift from the gods that he survived, let alone killed his opponent. The memory of the Snapper, his first true kill, growing limp and the Nature magic fading from his remaining eye would stay with the young Imperial for the rest of his days. Nightshade barely recovered in time to fight his next match, but still managed to scrape together a win. As his fighting skills increased, so did the power and experience of his opponents. Finally, he managed to reach the final match.

It was a long, brutal struggle with a shadow Ridgeback nearly twice his size. Nightshade used the other dragon's massive size to his advantage, ensnaring them in one of his nets, and knocking them off balance. The crowd called for blood, and Nightshade made a spectacle of plunging his trident in the Ridgeback's chest cavity. Listening to the cheers erupting from the bloodthirsty audience, Nightshade ripped the trident from his opponent's corpse, held it aloft, and roared. He had won the Plaguebringer's blood for Aconite!

Nightshade set out for Aconite as soon as he had the blood, not daring stop to rest. It took almost a fortnight, but he managed to reach the old Mirror, and snatch him from death’s door. The two of them then decided that, when able, they would move to the Scarred Wasteland, where the best healers in Sornieth tend to gather. With their assistance, Aconite stood the best chance of as close to a full recovery as he could get.

They then took up residence in an unnamed clan located somewhat near the amphitheatre where Nightshade was introduced to gladiator fighting. Eventually, he took to fighting again in order to pay Aconite’s healers. While he was fine fighting against dragons, beasts, Beastclan members, reanimated corpses, and even one time an Emperor (he still has nightmares), he would never again attempt to claim the life of another sentient being unless absolutely necessary, and so far has remained undefeated in combat.

  • Fights as a Retiarius
  • Coats trident, dagger, and claws in his own venom
  • Makes the nets he uses in fights himself (he’s actually really good at tying knots and weaving. The Nocturne twins will occasionally get him to help out with stuff at their shop if he isn’t busy)
