Song: Paper Mache Planes - Nova and the Experience

Who's gonna be changing?
I told you at least a hundred times before
No more, "I'll try's, " or singing me lies with your lullabies
We've been through this before

______Cattail works hard in her dusty little pawn shop, scrutinizing every item down to every last detail. Bring her anything and she can probably place a price to it! She's very close to SkippingStone. The two "sisters" are quite the dynamic duo!

______Cattail does miss her old clan sometimes, the shenanigans of it all. But the haunting memories that came with... she knew her choice to leave it behind was the right one. Even if it hurt. Even if she would never again see the cocky grin of the dragon that put the fool in fool's gold. The one that tried so hard. Too hard. And though she acted so indignant towards him, she had truly cared for him. She missed him. But that was the past now. She had Maxima, she had her shop (such an upgrade from her little market stand!). Things were okay now, she was safe, she was happy. The Windkeep Tower would likely never leave her dreams, but Cattail kept that close to her. The memory was valuable, so much more valuable than the gold and the artifacts that she sold. So much more valuable than anything she could ever sell. They were priceless.

excerpts from old lore

______"He wouldn't be so stupid."

______"He would if I struck a deal with him." Rori giggled.

______"Oh you sneaky little-"

______"Shh! Look, there is goes!" Rori cut him off, lifting the tablecloth a little more so they could look out across the meadow. A couple of stalls away, a bogsneak was seated, counting a pile of golden coins and whistling to herself. Nearby the sunlight was glinting off of a golden coloured mirror who was approaching the bogsneak's stall.

______"Oh, Cattail's going to kill him!" Kipling giggled into Rori's mane, his hands pulling gently on her hair in nervous excitement.

______"I know." Rori grinned smugly.

______"What do you want?" Luster has finally reached the stall and was leaning on the table and grinned charmingly at the angry bogsneak on the other side.

______"I've come to sell." Luster said, blinking innocently. "I happened to come across a necklace that once belonged to my mother."

______"Let me guess, solid gold?" Cattail rolled her eyes.

______"You're good!" Luster grinned, perking up.

______"No, I've just had to deal with a lot of fools like you trying to sneak your fool's gold past me." Cattail said, brow furrowed.

______"I am hurt that you would think such a thing of me!" Luster said, raising a paw to his chest. "When have I ever done such a thing?"

______"Let's see... There was last week, oh and another time last week, three times the week before..." Cattail began counting on her paws. "So forgive me if I am a little bit suspicious of you."

______"Don't you at least want to see the goods?" Luster asked. "Before you make such a harsh judgement?"

______"Fine." Cattail rolled her eyes.

______With a grin, Luster pulled out the necklace. It glinted gold in the sunlight, and a brilliant amethyst sat in the center.

______"It's mine." Rori explained. "It's definitely not real gold, but it sure looks nice."

______"Do you think she's really going to fall for it?" Kipling asked.

______Rori shrugged. "If she doesn't he owes me big time."

______Kipling crept down onto Rori's nose to get a closer look at the exchange.

______"Solid gold you say?" Cattail said, pulling the necklace closer to examine it.

______"Yes ma'am." Luster said with a grin.

______Cattail paused to glare at the young mirror for the comment, but resumed her study of the artifact. After what seemed like a considerable time, she stuck out her tongue and gave it a quick lick. The moment the tongue touched the metal, Kipling and Rori broke into peals of laughter.

______"A fake." She said, a smug grin on her face as she passed the necklace, still wet from being licked, back to Luster, who huffed with disappointment.

______"Every time." He shook his head and bounded away towards the table. "Every time! See I told you! She licks it every time! I'm not making it up!"

______As he scrambled under the table to join his friends, Rori let out a scream of a laugh and her tail swung violently, knocking over the table. Luster tripped over the tablecloth, sending it flying off the table and on top of the three friends. The group squirmed, too incapacitated by laughter to find a way out of the mess, not seeming to care at the number of dragons that were staring at them.

______"Luster walked into Fortescue's restaurant, hardly believing he was here for any reason other than stealing the silverware. But this was where he and Cattail had agreed to meet. He glanced around, wondering if she was here yet. That was when he caught sight of her, sitting at a table for two with tall red candles lit in the center.

______"So, you came." Cattail said, sounding impressed.

______"I am a man of my word." Luster pointed out.

______"Yeah, I know what you get up to. You are far from a man of honor." Cattail rolled her eyes.

______"Honorable? Maybe not. But I do stick to my word." Luster grinned. "So, you're actually here."

______"You intrigue me, how could I not." Cattail grinned back. "I do not trust you, and I'm not making any promises for a second date, but I figured I'd give you a chance."

______Luster was almost leaping with joy as he returned to his tent. His date with Cattail had gone splendidly. He had even barely laughed when she licked her silverware to see if it was truly made of silver. His heart felt light and fuzzy, and he himself was almost giggling now. Him, giggling. The thought was humorous even of itself. He was more of a chortling, booming laughter kind of guy. Or sniggering, he could do a good snigger. Cackling also was fun, in the right situation. But he, giggling? Never.

______Well, never until now.

______He still couldn't believe she had actually agreed to it. He had thought she didn't like him. Apparently, for all his teasing and tricks, she actually found him humorous to some degree. He just hoped he was lucky enough to get a second date. He was sure the novelty would wear off eventually, it always did.

______"Unagi! Unagi!" Soph exclaimed, racing down to the outdoor marketplace. She could hardly contain her excitement. By the time she reached the space where his stall normally stood, she looked around in confusion. He was normally up bright and early. had he slept in?

______"You're too late!" Cattail called from her stand. "He left early this morning!"

______"He left?" Soph asked, feeling her heart drop.

______"Yeah, what's it to ya? He's a travelling merchant, he wasn't going to stick around forever. He'll be back eventually, he always is." Cattail explained.

______"I know that, I just-" her breath caught in her throat. How could she explain her hopes and dreams, the way they had bubbled up inside of her with every moment spent with the merchant, how they had come to fruition just this morning, but he didn't know. And now he wouldn't.

______"Look, if you're going to get involved with someone like that, you need to be prepared for the consequences." Cattail pointed out. Soph hated the smug look on her face. She turned to go, anxious to return to her quarters.

______Unfortunately, by the time Luster had made his way down to the marketplace, all the vendors had closed up shop. It was surprisingly early for the clan to settle down for the night, as usually the clan services were open well into the night for the sake of tourists, the vendors usually taking longer breaks earlier in the day. But by the time the sun set, everyone had retreated to their quarters. Well, almost everyone. Luster had seen strange dragons wandering in the gathering darkness, thin and gangly. They sent shivers down his spine, and Luster too had quickly turned in for the night.

______Now that the sun was up, however, the clan was as active as usual. Tourists bustled around from stall to stall, and the dragons of Windkeep Tower had once again set to work.

______Now was his chance. Licking his forepaw and slicking it over his filigree, trying to shine it without dislodging it, he made his way up to Cattail's stand.

______"Hey." Luster raised his eyebrows, trying to flash her his most charming smile. To his dismay, the grumpy look on her face further stretched into an angry grimace.

______"What? You aren't even going to say hello to your boyfriend?" Luster tried again.

______"Get out." Cattail growled.

______"Babe, what did I do?" Luster grinned sheepishly. "Sure, I disappeared for what, a year? But that was a mistake. It's a long story, but if you give me a chance I can explain-" Great. Now he was gibbering. He was supposed to be getting information, not trying to win back his girlfriend.

______"You aren't welcome around here." Cattail snapped, turning away. "A bounty has been put on your head. Kipling and his friends. I've got enough trouble of my own without mixing with dragons like you."

______Luster felt her words like a blow to the gut, but he tried to stay strong. "What? Friends? I haven't seen Kipling for like a year!" It wasn't exactly a lie. "Please, I've been gone a while. I got myself into a bit of trouble. Can't you at least explain what's going on? Can't you give me another chance?"

______Cattail sighed. "You are an idiot, you know that? I can see your friend over there, she isn't exactly doing a good job of hiding." She gestured to a table that Rori was squeezed under, quite indiscreetly.

______The table that had once held Rori quite easily when she was younger and not yet fully grown now sat awkwardly on her back like a saddle. She grinned sheepishly at Luster and waved. Luster rolled his eyes and waved back, catching sight of Simon out of the corner of his eye. He was going to be in trouble.

______"Look. Please. I was lying about still being friends with Rori and Kipling but I still don't know what the heck is going on here." Luster begged. "I need your help, and then you never have to speak to me again, I promise."

______Cattail sighed. "Things are different here in Windkeep Tower now. Our new rulers, they have different standards. If you want to keep your livelihood, you have to abide by their rules. It's now every dragon for themselves. You can't trust nobody. Many dragons have proven to be not who we thought they were."

______"What do you mean?" Luster asked.

______"Look, bud, as much as I wish I could stand here talking to you, if you value the skin of you and your friends, you have to get moving, otherwise you're toast." Cattail urged. "And that's the last piece of info I've got for you."

______Luster turned to see where she was pointing and saw Simon eyeing him suspiciously. That was when Luster realized there was something off with the imperial sheriff. He was much skinnier, his mane wilder, and his eyes sharper. He eyed Luster like a vulture, and that's when Luster realized it wasn't Simon, but instead an imperial that looked somewhat similar. His face was narrower, and his body was painted with a skeletal outline.

______Luster's eyes widened with fear. There was something off about the dragon in the way that he moved. Cattail hadn't been kidding. He had to get he and Rori out of here.

______As he turned to make his exit, he could swear her heard a whisper from Cattail behind him, but he was too far away to hear what she said.

______"Hey beautiful!" Luster winked as he slid beside Cattail at the bar counter. The bogsneak rolled her eyes and took a drink from her cup.

______"What do you want Luster?" Cattail grunted.

______"I just wanted to talk to you again, now that everything has- passed." Luster explained, dropping his charming charade.

______"Look, I'm sorry about everything before, I shouldn't have been that cold, but Quartz had been breathing down our backs, and those undead warriors gave me the shivers," Cattail admitted, "But Luster, I don't know if we're anything that's actually going to work. We're too different, you and I, and I don't want you messing with the integrity of my business."

______"Can I at least try to woo you?" Luster asked, wiggling his eyebrows, "You know, I have my heart set on you, and I was able to do it once before."

______Cattail shook her head, laughing, "Luster, you are quite possibly the most persistent dragon I have ever met."

______"But is it working?" Luster asked, "I know you like me, don't try to deny it!"

______"What the heck, let's give it a go," Cattail shook her head, giving Luster a rare smile, "But I'm not making any promises here! I reserve the rights to call off this relationship at any point for any reason whatsoever. I still don't trust you, but you intrigue me, so I'm willing to explore this option."

______"Yes!" Luster exclaimed, jumping into the air and almost losing his filigree.

______"You know your filigree's dented. You should get it fixed. What were you doing in that battle?" Cattail asked.

______"I don't know what you're talking about!" Luster exclaimed, "My filigree is genuine!"

______"Luster, you're not getting me to lick your filigree," Cattail said, clearly unimpressed.

______"Aw man, it was worth a shot," Luster clicked in disappointment, shaking his head.

______"Just what am I getting myself into?" Cattail asked, leaning further onto the counter, "I think I need another drink."
