Biography
■
rahim hunger witch | ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ |
Hunger is a beast in its own right, so easily tamed in some cases, so difficult to vanquish in others. Some days, it takes only a bowl of soup to conquer it, and others, even the universe itself could not quench its strength. Such a variable power ought to be feared, which it is, and would be best defeated entirely, which it can never be.
Rahim understands the laws of hunger better than most. He has seen it in both finite and boundless forms, present in dragons of all ages, flights, creeds. It is indiscriminate, hunger is, and will claim any victim it can sink its teeth into. Even Rahim himself has felt it, though briefly. But he, unlike others, is at least blessed with magic to keep it at bay. When he longs for something to eat, his magic allows him to set that feeling aside. If he craves more power than he has, his will and witchcraft turn that desire into something more benign. Hunger is dangerous, and letting it roam free is akin to unleashing a curse.
There are remedies, though, even temporary ones, even ones that do not always seem to match up to the hunger they are set in opposition to. This is why Rahim is never found far from a roaring hearth and a cooking pot, because he has seen time and again that every hunger, simple to grand, can be quelled for a time with a proper meal.
It brings him joy, making sure those around him remain well-fed. Dragons in need of a full belly deserve it entirely, as Rahim cannot abide such a sort of starvation, and dragons with too much ambition in their hearts often scale back in the wake of well-prepared food. What more can one want immediately after finishing a home-cooked meal than more of that meal, after all? Most importantly, though, is the gesture, because dragons starved of love and care are the ones Rahim worries most about.
He can feel their longing for miles, a pain sharp and aching just beneath his heart. No one deserves to starve of such a fundamental thing, and it is the least he can do to set a hot meal down in front of the loneliest he knows, the least he can do to ask, "Can I help you?"
Compassion feeds the soul in much the same way as casserole does the body, and it is by far less taxing than banishing hunger by witchcraft. Kindness and mercy can be sustained in ways magic cannot, and in a world like Sornieth, with witches around every corner and natural magics bursting to life everywhere, it is the simple acts of kindness that are most radical.
Rahim cannot soothe everyone's hunger, but he can sense those most in need of a listening ear and a warm bowl of soup, and sometimes, that means more than anything in the world.
