Despite the warnings from her mother, from the elders, from her nest mate, despite all of the hushed voices, the whispers, the stares - despite all of that, she just couldn't help herself.

She felt a pull, a calling. Almost as if something was summoning her. What could it be? Her mother had even tried to confine the young wildclaw to her nest, but it hadn't worked. This girl was crafty, almost deceitful in her ploys to escape her mother's watchful eye. Finally she resolved that she would just have to wait until the cover of darkness to explore this summons more thoroughly.

And so she did.

From then on she perfected the art of waiting until dark, sneaking away from the nest undetected and venturing off into the cover of the woods to learn. She had to. She needed to know more about it.

The Magic.

The dark, obscure, enigmatic force that she could feel coursing through her veins day in and day out. She needed to know more about it.

She visited the same dark, shrouded den that night as she had many times before. The old Nocturne within, though he appeared scary to most, welcomed her in. He had sensed the presence within her as well, and was glad she had come to him in her quest to learn more.

But this one was different. And he unfortunately lacked the specific skills to help her. He often went over it in his mind; how to lead her down the right path. It was a narrow path, and she could be easily swayed the wrong way, something he feared could happen all too easily. While his services could serve as a fine introduction to the spirit world and the world of magic, he was not nearly as skilled or advanced as some dragons he had heard tellings of from far away clans. He worried that she was in a league above him, one with the likes of those legendary dragons.

She padded into his den, eyes wide with curious lust. He smiled and began to speak to what he wanted to show her this evening. They were discussing potions tonight. Combinations of different plants, materials and even occasionally a familiar (though not recommended as that was advanced magic) could help to channel the magic forces as the brewer saw fit. Many potions were made to help, while others could actually harm. Potions were one way to help dragons communicate with those passed on from this world, something the Nocturne would do to provide comfort for his grieving clan mates. But this was a delicate process, and not something to be taken lightly.

As he continued to teach and explain different substances on shelves around his den, the young wildclaw noticed the cauldron over in the corner. When he noticed her eyeing it up he gently laughed. "Oh no my dear, unfortunately that will have to wait for another time. We must cover the theory first." She frowned. Turning towards him, he once again turned towards the shelves and continued speaking. But her attention was drawn to the cauldron once again. Who could she summon with just the right ingredients thrown in? She closed her eyes and listened.

The fire within. A serthis, and their earthly remains. She let the presence guide her and reached out her claws. They clinked against a glass jar, opening her eyes she saw it labelled as Firebelly Venom. A scorpion? Absently she reached behind her and grabbed another jar, this time, Serthis Poison. She looked up at the Nocturne, he was in the other corner, still talking and facing away from her. An amateur mistake.

She calmly dropped the firebelly venom into the cauldron. It fizzed slightly, but did nothing else. She grabbed a handful of bone fragments that were laying on a shelf nearby, inspected them, then poured some poison into the mix. This time it fizzed louder, and appeared to come to a rolling boil. Then she dropped a single fragment in. The cauldron boomed loudly and spit a cloud out into the air. The Nocturne spun around, and upon seeing her ingredients, reached out, concern written on his face.

Do it. Now!

The voice urged the Wildclaw on and she grinned wide, then dropped her remaining handful of fragments into the mix.

A shockwave rang out as the cauldron seemed to explode. The Nocturne was thrown back from the force, and blinded from the flash of vibrant green. Jars on the shelf shattered, and it felt as if all the air had been sucked out of the room.

But the Wildclaw stood over her potion, seemingly unaffected by the force. She looked slightly ethereal, her aura visible and her eyes glowing. A force seemed to rise out of the cauldron - a ghost? A spirit? He had never seen a spirit in a physical sort of mass like this. Only just felt and heard their presence.

The form rose out of the cauldron, surrounded the Wildclaw, and then disappeared into her body. She was grinning wildly, and when she opened her eyes they continued to glow. Dark purple, but with flashes of lightning blue underneath.

In the blink of an eye she was at his side, leaning over him, that wicked grin making his scales crawl. "Come my dear," she said in a voice not her own. "Tonight we feast!" He wasn't sure if she was talking to him, or about him. He wasn't going to take his chances.

"Spirit! I order you to leave this place at once!" He tried to keep his voice even, but this was unlike anything he had experienced before. She tilted her head sideways and peered at him, considering his words for a moment. Then she bared her teeth and raised her claws, ready to strike.

Suddenly a noise in the forest outside caught her attention. She paused, and her eyes dimmed for a moment. Then she lowered her claws, smiled eerily once more and dashed out of the den and into the darkness. Running through the bushes her senses were heightened, the summoned spirit helping to guide her through the woods. She knew exactly where to place each foot as she ran, she knew exactly where to duck, twist and turn. She was picking up the scent of fresh blood in the air and at that moment all she could think about was the sweet taste of warm meat on her tongue.

The clearing revealed a small hatchling caught in the brambles. She could sense its spirit, terrified. "Don't worry dear," she said soothingly, approaching it in a fluid, almost calming motion. "Soon this will all be over." Whose child was this? She listened intently, but could hear no signs of anyone searching around for this lost hatchling. The spirit within her moved her to make the decision, urging her towards its own truth. This hatchling was abandoned. Can't you feel its spirit leaving the body? She nodded, and moved to comfort the hatchling again. She hummed, placed her paw on it's back, and felt it calm slightly at her touch. Then she closed her eyes, inhaled deeply and.... "Be free."

The spirit hummed within her, as she enjoyed her meal. It was delicious, unlike anything she had ever tasted. Concern grew in the back of her mind at what this spirit had led her to do, but the humming grew louder to drown the thought out. Perhaps she could learn yet how to control this force, and how to bend it to her will. She would become most powerful.
