ERROR SEARCHING FOR HIVE... ERROR SEARCHING FOR HIVE... ERROR HIVE NOT FOUND When a hive is destroyed, drones cannot live. The death of a Consciousness is followed by the death of the drones, unless they are found and quickly absorbed by another hive. Even drones who survive the shock of losing the connection to the hivemind are not immune; without the control and constant prompting of a Consciousness, a drone loses direction, forgets to sleep and eat and dies within a matter of days. This drone was found near dead in the desert. It did not resist when it was found and carried to a nearby farmhouse, when water was poured down its throat by gentle but determined paws, or when it was tucked into unfamiliar softness and lost consciousness again. It was nothing less than a stroke of luck that Ned and Helen happened upon the drone; it was nothing less than a stroke of luck that it was too exhausted to attack; perhaps even a bigger stroke that the farmers had never heard of the Hivemind and didn't realize the danger they might be in. Even after realizing the thing half-buried in the sand was no dragon, they and their family wanted to save its life. They tended the drone, restrained it when it fought, and taught it to speak. By the time the drone was able to tell them its story, it had lost all connection to the hive. Drones were not supposed to live this long without a Consciousness. But then, was it truly a drone anymore? The drone needed a name and chose Four, all it remembered of its designation in the hive. Later, Four declared herself no longer an 'it'. * Slowly but surely, Four became a full-fledged member of the family. She plucked fruit, plowed fields, repaired irrigation pipes, and generally made herself useful around the farm. Murr taught her to read and write. Phyllis taught her the beginnings of math, then Sandy made gentle corrections and taught her the rest. She lived and ate with Helen and Ned, who loved her like a daughter. Despite joking (once she learned to joke) that this was her new hive, Four knew she would never return to that brutal and thoughtless existence. In fact, she swore to never even think of it again. Until Five showed up... |
