— Born of the Ice —

Lightning streaks across a black sky, thunder booms heaven's wrath and the wild wind howls its horrible cry. This tempest would awe even the Stormcatcher himself; a flyer would be a fool to brave a storm such as this.

But to the mechanic furiously scribbling down a record of their life's work by the light of lit candelabra, that world is more than a velvet curtain and a windowpane away. Claws stained with machine oil and grease holds a pen in a death-grip, writing passionately in a scrawl they will struggle to decipher later but that matters little now.

Behind the mechanic waits the droid, or rather, what is left of it. Twisted ruins of glass-metal wings frame the broken, torn apart body, and lifeless eyes peer dully from a cobalt-blue casing. And there, printed neatly in red on the underside of the unit's jaw: the proud signature of its long forgotten maker. It should belong in a scrap heap. It came from one, actually.

The mechanic has tried to put the destroyed unit back together but they are but an apprentice, and it shows in the clumsy welding and the tangle of wires shoved into the droid's maintenance hatch. Tools lie in disarray, littered about the raised workbench, and if an onlooker tilts their head and squints just a little, the droid, the workbench, the scatter of screwdrivers and wrenches and saws seem to form some semblance of a shrine, one to a deity the mechanic will not meet in this lifetime or the next.

But it will work, they think, sending a prayer up to any deity willing to listen. It has to.

The moment of truth. Breathless, they shove the scroll aside and turn towards their masterpiece. With a trembling claw, they lean forward and-- the generator flips on with a rhythmic rumble that rattles the mechanic's teeth and seems to fill the room. Or is it their own heartbeat, deafening in the quiet?

The moonstone eyes are the first to light up, like fog lights in the mist. Open, inquisitive-- if a droid can look curious-- irises alight upon the mechanic's fascinated countenance. A set of fragile wings creak as they rise to frame the droid's body in a halo of cobalt glass, and one can quite clearly see the cracks and missing pieces in where the light shines through. The droid's casing has been ripped off in places, the most obvious of which is the missing half of their face, whose circuitry is laid bare for all to see.

It's a fixer-upper for sure, but to the mechanic, inexperienced and young, the rusty, creaky droid is nothing short of beautiful.
