____Growing up, all the children of the dragons who operate a magical nuclear reactor (similar to the one that birthed the Arcanist, though nowhere near its scale) have to play with are spare parts, an assortment of tools, and, if they are lucky, a pool of contaminated coolant. Fortunately, due to their distant relation to the Plague Wastebug subspecies, what levels of radiation that would have killed a normal dragon long ago have little to no effect on them at all.

It matters little what paths they eventually choose for themselves, all learn the laws of science and the rules of magic; as for what they will choose to do with this knowledge is a question only time will answer.

The moment he is old enough to be allowed to even touch it, Opheri obsesses over the nuclear reactor. It's powered by magic, he's heard, but there must be something beyond the magic, something behind it, and-- that's only the first of his questions.

I have to know, he reasons, with all the determination and force of a hurricane. There are so many questions he wants answered and many more that have yet to be asked. He wants to hunt the deities down and stare up into those all-seeing eyes that have beheld cataclysms and the first thing he knows he will ask is:
