Biography
They could not wipe out the North-East gales
Nor what those gales set free —
The pirate ships with their close-reefed sails,
Leaping from sea to sea.
The pirates roamed the ocean wild
Their flags of black and red unfurled
With treasure and with plunder piled
They left destruction in their wake
Despite the storms that raged above
The pirates sailed with fearless love
For adventure and for freedom's sake
They braved the waves and braved the storm
But time has passed and pirates fade
Into the pages of history
Their ships now rust and rot away
But still their legend lives on strong.
In an honest service there is thin commons, low wages, and hard labour. In this, plenty and satiety, pleasure and ease, liberty and power. No, a merry life and a short one shall be my motto. Since I had dipp'd my hands in muddy water, I must be a pirate. It's better being a Commander than a common man.
Of all the pyratical crews that were ever heard of, none of the English name came up to this, in barbarity. Their mirth and their anger had much the same effect, for both were usually gratified with the cries and groans of their prisoners; so that they almost as often murdered a man from the excess of good humour, as out of passion and resentment; and the unfortunate could never be assured of safety from them, for danger lurked in their very smiles.
Etymology
Latin Orcinus (“of the realms of the dead”), from Orcus + -inus
Orcus was a god of the underworld, punisher of broken oaths in Italic and Roman mythology. As with Hades, the name of the god was also used for the underworld itself. In the later tradition, he was conflated with Dis Pater.
Orcus was portrayed in paintings in Etruscan tombs as a hairy, bearded giant. It is likely that he was transliterated from the Greek daemon Horkos, the personification of Oaths and a son of Eris.
Suffix
-īnus m (feminine -īna, neuter -īnum); first/second declension
