SLAINE - Blood Witch

While his elder sister is at home on the battlefield, even proud of her ferocious ways, Slaine prefers to keep far from it when possible. Battle is gruesome and inelegant, frustratingly so, and he has not taken a shine to it the same way Sanela has.

Nonetheless, he finds himself called back again and again.

It's the gift that races in his veins, the thrumming in his ears that never goes away, not even as he sleeps. He tastes the iron in the air, the heat on the wind, and he has known the truth since he was young: he is a blood witch, and he holds life in his claws.

This gift has not gone unnoticed, and time and again, he is called to the front as a medic, to put the blood back in dragons' bodies where it belongs. Not all of them make it. Some bleed out before he arrives, and others have bled too much, too long. Slaine can only do so much before blood loses its magic, separated too long from the body, and not every case is a success.

But he tries all the same, coming whenever he is called, healing however he can. He wonders if it will stop wars, these near death experiences he subverts, but then he wonders if more will continue because he has saved so many. It is an uncertain line to walk.

His sister fights because it's the only language she knows-- blood on her teeth, adrenaline in her veins-- and while he's been taught the same tongue and knows it with a familiarity that he'd much rather not possess, there is little denying that his path lies elsewhere.
