NINA
Undercity Librarian

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

[ Lore ]

Nina stared at the machine in disbelief. An intruder in the library? It did happen, particularly if the overdue books had self-transport spells. As a thin, high whine snaked through the air, the Skydancer took off in a rustle of feathers and lace.

Elsewhere in the library, a little Fae screamed. All he’d wanted to do was see the medical book his brother had been so worried about, fretting that there’d be hell to pay with the librarian. Petruchio had opened the cover in time to see the words “OVERDUE” flash across the frontispiece in angry red letters. The tome had then imploded into this other location—and dragged him after it.

He found himself surrounded by...walls? The tome burst from beneath him and thunked into a slot in the nearest...These weren’t walls after all. They were shelves, all tightly packed with books and winding into the depths of...wherever this was.

Lost alone in a strange place, Petruchio did what any child would do: he wailed like a warning siren, a single, annoyingly high-pitched note.

A whir in the air, and a Skydancer alighted before him. After a surprised silence, she muttered, “I suppose I should be grateful you aren’t a fire.”

“I’m lost!” Petruchio shrieked. The Skydancer’s feathers bristled. “I’m sorry, could you scream just a bit louder?”

“H...Huh?”

“This is a library, little boy,” she hissed, glaring daggers at him. Petruchio flattened his frills contritely.

A faint smile graced the Skydancer’s face. “Better. Now, how did you get here?”

Petruchio pointed out the medical volume. The Skydancer cocked a dark eye at it. “So, it’s overdue. A treatise on pathology? I suppose to a Fae, it would be like a restaurant menu.” She turned and then fluttered away into the darkness. Petruchio skittered frantically after her.

“We’d best get you home.” She grinned at him before darting around a shelf. As Petruchio rounded the corner, he was engulfed in a cloud of purple smoke. Ahead, the Skydancer had paused before a desk, atop which was an unidentifiable machine. It was displaying a map, presumably of the library.

“The intruder has been located!” it beeped, lights twinkling across its surface. “Librarian Nina, the intruder has—”

“Oh, for goodness’ sake,” grumbled Nina. Petruchio winced as she fetched the machine a resounding whack. It beeped in surprise and fell silent.

You’re the librarian?”

She motioned him to silence as she opened...not a door, but...a book? It was larger than Petruchio, and colors and shapes moved across the paper. He stared, dumbstruck, at an animated rendering of the room he’d tumbled from. His brother’s study.

“Look familiar?” Nina smirked. “Come on, off you go.”

“But how—”

“Before I lose my temper,” she hissed, leaning over the book towards him. Petruchio looked at her face, really looked, and now he noticed the pale lines gleaming upon her skin...maybe through her skin? Underneath the lace and ribbons, her eyes were just a bit too dark, and her red hide gleamed oddly. Her wings rustled, strange shapes peeking from among the feathers....

He gulped. “Th-thank you, Librarian, for h-helping me.”

Nina’s own reply was a stiff nod. Petruchio leaned towards the picture...

~ ~ ~

Nina watched the Fae crash back into the study. An older Tundra, perhaps a relative, approached him, and the scene began fading as the portal wavered shut. The librarian closed the book, patting it fondly before returning it to its shelf—it was one of the more helpful ones.

She hadn’t had a visitor in a long time. Really, she preferred it that way. Visitors could be so noisy—worse than the machines, because it wasn’t as if you could smack them to shut them up. Still, they did have their good points. She recalled the hatchling’s whisper: “You’re the librarian?”

There were times when fear could be gratifying. This hadn’t been one of those; Nina didn’t demand fear. But silence, on the other hand, was well worth it. Deep in the library amidst the battalions of books, the librarian was sovereign—and silence was worth more than gold.

Nina is a fan of puzzles and riddles. Many of her secret doors and passages rely on solving a series of puzzles, and in her room is a stack of old, well-loved books of riddles. She rarely gives straight answers, especially when concerning... certain rumors about herself.
