Of Thorns & Roses
Lineage and Lore Book
The kingdom had lost its king.
Now grief had taken its queen.
If anyone would have even remembered its prince…
The Crone crooned softly, her decaying claws tap, tap, tapping - screeching against the remains of the shattered shield that hung across the blazing fireplace like a mangled trophy, the silver and tangerine dulled over by rust, by spilled blood. Atop from the snapping flames hung a cauldron, reeking the nefarious scent of a rancid carcass, broken bones and flies flitting in the air as if what was cooking was such a delicacy. And yet it was overrode with the cloying scent of peppermint candy, confusing even the senses of something sweet and yet consumed by pestilence.
The hatchling shivered, and not only from the cold. It’s still Gama! he forced himself to think as he watched his beloved grandmother slowly wither away to the effects of the spreading darkness. It’s still her! But he felt his resolve slip, little by little after every scratch and slice the blade in her hand made, staining everything red, his lifeblood being leeched away and collected into the infernal cauldron. I’m trying to help her… The fires spat, the air was full of this pungent odor that made his vision swim and threatened to make him pass out into the folds of nightmare, hearing a guttural incantation from the throes of his last remaining consciousness, fighting the urge to close his eyes and sleep forever.
“My grandson…” came the curdled voice of the rotting dragon, her teeth and claws besmirched with corruption, disease by the flesh. “My Emperor… You will not be alone, my sweet… Never again…
The screams didn’t sound like his own, and yet he felt like his throat was on fire, clawing and catching for breath. His body was convulsing, his blood boiling like the sun was burning directly under his skin - his bones starting to meld and crack, feeling his skin beginning to tear. The pain that flooded him was something he’s never felt before, nothing that would compare at how he wanted to close his eyes and let it end… Please… Let it end…
Then he was falling, weightless as he watched with unfocused eyes a light that bloomed from above him, as if the heavens had opened and finally hear him. Newer voices, a screech that seemed to have no end, grating at the recesses of his mind as midnight black winds enveloped his failing body, a red firefly and a bright blue rune burning through his memories as he finally closed his eyes.
But never the same as he was. The young dragon shivered in his new body, his snout and whiskers, the whisper of leather - gone. Replaced. But also his wounds, the pain of his memories, of losing his father, mother... everyone he had ever loved. The lilt of water whispering from the edges of the inlet where he found himself in reminded him of the dragoness once more, and found her studying him from across the waters, beside the one whose pelt shimmered with a million stars. The skydancer - the Witch - spoke first. "This is not your end, my dear... Only your beginning."
