To most, he's a charming young dragon. Sure, his faceted glance makes him look a little unusual, but that's all. Well, something does feel a bit off, but it's probably just those eyes.

To others, he's a monster.

A half-corpse made of rotting feathers and jutting bone, a halo of toxic decay ringing his head. His smiles are more grimaces filled with teeth. Claws stained with blood. This is his curse, the reason why his mother threw him out the day she saw him wail. Red drips down his decomposing body and when he laughs, it's like a tortured soul screaming. He is thrown out of every lair, sometimes by those who don't even understand their clanmates' terror.

Ankila was one of the first who could see his true form, yet didn't run. Sure, plague dragons every so often took a good look at him and asked him to visit their lairs, but there were always other dragons freaked out by such a maimed light dragon. Others were confused. He caught her watching him from the corner of his eye in the market, but it was still a surprise when she appeared out of the shadows to greet him. She invited him into the clan, and despite his protests, he joined her tribe. The dragons were wary at first but did not dare object against the clan matriarch's decision. In time, they have accepted him - in a way.

It is curious who can see this curse, as it seems to show itself randomly. If he tried, Flare might be able to discover the reason why it shows itself to some but not others. But, as it is, he would prefer to stay hidden as not to startle anyone with his horrific form.

He came during a lull in service, just before the stall was due to close. Melted from the shadows. A young wildclaw, by the looks of it, wearing a black cloak and a row of bird skulls. The clattered together softly as he walked.

He slowed as he approached the cart as if having doubts about whether he should continue. The wildclaw looked around, making sure no one was watching, before lowering his hood. It was confusing why he had gone to such lengths to hide his face, which seemed normal enough. Then the cracks started to show - a hint of something deeper, a terrible secret. As if noticing the change in atmosphere, he spoke quickly.

"My name's Flare. I heard of your stall from a couple of associates who recommended I ask after a horoscope and a card reading." It seemed difficult for him to ask his question. "Will- will I ever find acceptance?"

Carina was squinting slightly at the strange Wildclaw, but after he spoke her face softened.
"Oh, love - I don't know whether a humble fortune teller can answer you that. But I will do my best..."

Carina wrote:

Let's begin with your horoscope.
You were born under the Lesser Sign of the Aardvark, in Earth's sway. As with all lesser signs, this is also heavily influenced by your Light element - you are of Light, yes?

A gentle creature, the Aardvark, though it often lurks unseen below ground. As autumn swells and leaves begin to fall, take stock of where you are, what friends and loved ones you have gathered around you. Nurture these bonds in preparation for the long winter ahead, and know that your true friends will always stand by you.

We'll try a little relationship spread, hmm? This first card is a strength of yours, something that brings you and others together. The Ten of Crowns. This suggests that you have a great fortune to pass on, whether that fortune be physical, emotional, or spiritual. You're a treasure trove, love - a hidden jewel. You have had many experiences, both good and ill, which you may share with the people around you, many lessons to teach. Those who know you know this side of you, and rejoice in the bounty you have to offer.

This second card is a flaw - or, more accurately, something you can improve upon to better yourself. The Obscured Crescent, and inverted... hmm. A difficult card to interpret. The Obscured Crescent, of course, is a card of illusion, nightmare, the bridge to the unconscious and the wild... and inverted, these meanings are subverted, turned on their axes. What is it that you fear - what illusions do you bind yourself with? The Obscured Crescent advises that you delve into your subconscious and seek a better understanding of yourself. There is a tangle in your heart, an inner confusion, emotions repressed. Find these, and undo the knot. You will be the better for it, and you may find that it improves your standing with others.

This last card offers advice on how to cultivate your friendships, to overcome obstacles and find the acceptance that you seek. Ah, another Crowns card, the Seven of Crowns. This is a card of long, hard labour, of great toil that is now, finally, beginning to pay off. You have worked hard and suffered much to get to where you are now. But the journey is not quite over yet. There is still work to do. Friendship, acceptance, love--these things are like seeds; they must be cultivated and nurtured. Tend to them with diligence and kindness, and in time the miracle of growth will quite surprise you. Take the long view. Your investments will pay off.

Altogether, these cards suggest that you can and will find acceptance--perhaps not with all, and perhaps not without work. The Seven of Crowns advises that you work to cultivate friendships, and that this labor will pay off. But together with the Obscured Crescent, it has another meaning: take care of yourself. Remember to tend to your own needs, and do not remain in relationships which pain you. Break the bonds which hold you back, dispense with the illusions, and you will grow as a person even as you grow in acceptance.

Flare paused for a while after she had finished speaking, contemplating her words in silence. His eyes were unfocused, deep in thought.

"Thank you for your wisdom," he mumbled eventually. His tail flicked nervously as he stood up, donning his hood once more. He gave a bow, a strangely polite gesture, before dashing back in the direction he came, gone in the blink of an eye.

A few minutes later, as Carina finished packing up, she noticed the dark silhouette of a wildclaw flying against the setting sun. It was only then, as he shrunk to a speck in the fading light, that she noticed the toxic halo of decay ringing his head.
