Biography

lost_hearts_hatchery_thin_banner_by_cennys-dcsgoxj.png

Arian smiled and pranced through the snow as best as his serpentine body would allow. Unlike his parents, who were both bred and raised in the warm domain of the Lightbringer, Arian had been hatched here in the Southern Icefield. The cold and the snow was all he had ever known and he loved it. With awkward leaps and bounds, he gallivanted through the pristine white wilderness with a heart full of joy. Behind him strolled his mother, Kara, her watchful eyes ever on her son. He was by far smaller than his nestbrother and so was more vulnerable to the dangers of the ice floes they called home. As they wandered, Arian pestered his mother with all sorts of questions. Kara patiently answered every single one as best she could, marveling at just how much energy spiral dragons had. Each step they took brought a new question. Occasionally, Arian would trip and disappear into the snow, leaving a small, dragon shaped hole behind. At that point it would be up to Kara to fish her tiny son back out.

“Look, Mama!” Arian beamed proudly up at his mother as she pulled him to freedom yet again. In his tiny paws he held out a large silver stone. It was perfectly smooth and reflective enough to allow the young dragon to see his own face in it. “What is it?”

A warm smile crossed Kara’s face as she stared down at his discovery. “Where I was born, we call that an Arian Stone. They are very rare and very special.”

Arian tilted his head this way and that, watching his reflection mirror the movements upon the stone’s surface. Eventually, he leaned in closer and turned the right side of his face towards it, using his tail tip to prod the hardened scales covering that side of his head. “Is this why you named me after them? The stone is the same colour as them.”

Kara nodded. “You are also very special, Arian. Just like this stone.”

“What’s so special about these scales?” Arian’s face fell, and he looked up at his mother sadly. “Papa said I had two older sisters that both died before I was born. They both had these scales. Am I going to die, too?”

This took Kara by surprise. Quickly, she shook her head. “No, my prince. It wasn’t the scales that took your sisters’ lives. Look at me. I also have the same scales as you, but I have made it well into my adult years. Dragons like us are no different than any others. Your sisters, bless their souls, were taken by other means. Remember them but do not let their memories cause you to fear for you own life.”

Arian looked back down at the stone in his paws. “It’s very pretty,” he mused quietly. “Do you think my sisters would have liked them?”

“Rakara would have.” Kara nodded solemnly. “She had the same silver scales as you.”

“And Karsey?”

“Karsey saw beauty in everything. I have no doubt that she would also have loved Arian Stones.”

Arian smiled at this and wriggled free from his mother’s grasp. Clumsily, he slithered back into the hole he had made. Kara waited patiently for a moment, then began to carefully dig away the snow covering her son. When she finally unearthed him, he grinned up at her. His arms were full of Arian Stones.

“I want to take them home,” he pleaded. “We should build a shrine to my sisters. I never met them, but they’re still family. If they both would have liked these stones, I want to use them to build a memorial for them so that their spirits know they haven’t been forgotten.”

A sad smile crept onto Kara's face as she watched him continue to gather stones. “Oh, my prince. You’re too pure for this world. I’m sure they would love that.”
