[From Writer's Hatchery. Prompt: Where am I broken?]
Azura heaved herself up over the top of a steep slope and collapsed with a
pained grunt. This journey to Light territory paled in comparison to the move from Starfall Isles to the Sea of a Thousand Currents, but that didn't make things any easier.
She slowly got to her feet again with a wobble, and turned her head back at the Tangled Wood to scowl at the watching eyes she knew were there. What scoundrels, teasing and attempting to set up traps to make her seem even less sane and capable. Perhaps not all shadow flighters were that way, but a group of ill-meaning dragons followed her anyway. The nuisances.
With a huff and a haughty sweep of the tail, she limped into the amber colored fields of her destination. It was already getting warmer and a pleasant heat settled on her shoulders, easing her joints into a relatively smooth stride. Tempting sun-warmed blocks of rubble rested near a stream nearby, and the sky was painted the same color of blue she learned to love by the tsunami flats.
Hopefully this would be a better home. Light was renowned for their scholars and researchers, and was enticingly wealthy. Azura wouldn't call herself picky, but there was a certain amount of things she needed to stay content. Not that she needed(or wanted) to be fussed over, mind you.
A few turns along the border of trees and she abruptly collided with a green and white blur. Wind was knocked out of her lungs and she and the newcomer tumbled to the ground. White hot adrenaline shot through her veins and she held on fiercely, hissing in fury. The world whirled, and the dull ache that normally weighed on her vanished in an explosive attempt to survive. She bit a mouthful of feathers and swiped blindly, targeting anything within reach. The weight scrambled off with a yelp, stringing together a rather impressive slew of curses. She flipped upright and growled, bunching her legs under herself. The attacker, a female skydancer, backed away and tended briefly to the bite wound now on her wing, intending to cast off aggression. Azura waited tensely.
The dragoness infront of her finished, looked up, and said, "So, who are you?"
After the initial shock faded and she caught her breath, the pain returned twice-fold. Azura bristled, attempting to mask her brief loss of focus with aggression. She snapped, "I don't know, someone who looks where they're going?"
"Great, but you didn't need to bite me."
"I can bite anyone I want."
"Wh- No you can't?"
"Try me, featherfluff."
As they snipped back and forth, Azura had the chance to get a better look at this fireball of a dragon. She wasn't pretty, by any means. Her wings were dappled a pale green, while her body was splotched blue on a muddy red-brown background. White striped across her legs and neck, with her belly colored similarly. Grace was lost on this bizarre skydancer, but confidence and strength fueled her damn well enough. She had a sharp wit, too, using clever insults and good wordplay. They were strangely alike- a nice surprise for once.
"Okay, okay, slow down, miss. I still don't have your name, or why you're here."
Azura had relaxed slowly, but now tensed and flicked her tail tip at the question. ...This was the first creature she'd met here, was it safe? Would word be spread about her? Having who-knows-what in pursuit thinking that she was easy prey wasn't appealing. She hadn't stood up yet, so off the bat there was no telling.
She paused a heartbeat longer.
"You go first."
"Fair. My name's Snowfall. Sorry for quite literally bumping into you."
She snickered in spite of herself, earning a cheeky grin from 'Snowfall'.
"I think that bite will be enough of a reminder to watch where you're going. ...I'm Azura." She shifted on the ground and couldn't help a wince at the usual spike of pain. She got up anyway, and balanced heavily on her working hind leg until all limbs unfolded.
"...Mind showing me around?"
