Many eerie things happened around Nexus, even before he hatched from his egg. The dragons around didn't care much at first, but after a while, they couldn't overlook these happenings anymore... Right after he and his siblings were placed in the nest waiting for them to hatch, the eggs showed signs of disappearing life. They didn't look physically ill, yet it looked as if their life was slowly flowing away - they lost their shine, and slowly died one after another, all except one: Nexus. The adults were worried about the phenomenon, as there was no signs of egg decay in ages. After his hatch, his mother noticed, that Nexus had absolutely no emotions, and he wasn't talking either. He listened well and was obedient, but he showed no interest in anything. He got avoided by other hatchlings, even his parents were reluctant to touch him. As he grew, another strange thing occured: the healthier Nexus became, the sicker his parents looked. They couldn't sleep well, they were tired all day, and had no power in them. His mother saw some kind of connection between the events, and she suspected it to be a curse. She took Nexus to a nearby sage, to ask for his skills. While she explained the various events to the sage, he thoroughly examined Nexus. His expression grew darker by each minute, which made the mother anxious. - „Can you help my child?” - She asked nevously, while looking back and forth between her son and the sage. - „Madam, I'm afraid this is not something that can be cured.” - the sage looked at her, and shook his head. - „What do you mean? Will my son die?!” - her voice was full of panic. The sage fell silent as he furrowed his eyebrows, then shook his head again. - „Madam, I don't have the right words to explain this. Excuse me, but you need to experience this for yourself.” - he grabbed the mother's hand, and pressed it to Nexus's chest. His mother gasped as ultimate terror filled her eyes, and she yanked her hand away from the hatchling with a sharp scream - Nexus's heart wasn't beating at all! - „What... what's this? What's happening?” - she trembled from fear, and took many steps backwards. - „Just what you felt.” - The sage gave off a heavy sigh. - „Your son is dead. Or rather, as I'm suspecting, he was never alive to begin with.” - „How?” - the mother's voice was no more than a faint whisper. - „Well, I have a theory. The perished eggs, your lack of energy makes me think, that he's feeding on the life force of living beings around him. The older he becomes, the more energy he needs. He's clearly an undead. But this... I have never seen anything like this before. An undead is alive at first, then it's brought back by an external or internal influence. This boy however, has never been alive. He was born dead. There's no sign of decay, he's growing, he looks alive... yet he is dead. On top of that, I don't sense any kind of remnants of necromancy in him, he probably did this on his own. Your son...” - „This thing is not my son!” - she interrupted him with a hysterical shout - „I don't care what you do with it, I want to be as far from this monster, as I can!” - she turned, and ran away in a hurry. The sage was gazing after her for a few minutes, before looking at the abandoned hatchling in his house. Nexus looked him in the eye for the very first time, and opened his mouth. - „The world around us is changing.” - the hatchling's voice sent shivers down his spine. It was deep and ancient, almost rumbling with a slight echo. Definitely not a youngster's voice. The sage prepared a pendant for the child to prevent him from sucking life away from others, then sent him off. Nexus wandered across many regions aimlessly. As he grew up, his sclera blackened, showing his difference. The pendant could no longer contain his power, dried plants and lifeless animal corpses indicated where he passed. Later an undead Imperial came across him, and escorted him to his new clan, where he was welcomed by dragons who believed they know a solution for his problem. He doesn't speak. The words he said to the sage, were the only ones he ever uttered. No one knows the reason behind this, they can only guess, since asking Nexus himself about it is no option. He can swiftly drain life away from any living being he touches, he often kills his foes this way. Since he has no emotions, he feels nothing even if he kills. Killing, helping, good or bad, nothing can make him feel anything. He's connected to the Clan with the Black Flames, this provides him with enough life force each day. As all dragons in the Clan are connected, the whole Clan functions as one big existence full of energy for him. As he's an undead, he cannot be killed. When he's injured, his body regenerates from the life force he recieves. Even if he loses some limbs, he just uses ice to freeze back the body part, and waits for it to fully regenerate, and connect to his body again. Reversus was the undead Imperial who guided him to the Clan. Dreamscape sensed a strong eradiation of Death, so she sent him to check on it, saying as an undead he doesn't need to fear Death. He's not called "Prince" because of his origins, but for his unique way of existence as an undead. |
