FRAGMENT'S life was cut short when they were out hunting scraps of the Shade, as they were captured and assimilated by a Hive. They spent countless decades "living" as a defense drone under the command of their Consciousness, until one of the Icewarden's armies destroyed the Hive, killed the Consciousness and many of the drones, and left the rest to scatter and die off. They fled to the nearest landmass--the Starfall Isles--and went into hibernation, awaiting a new Consciousness to discover and reclaim them. They waited for many years, and in that time, the Arcanist's magic took advantage of their lack of a guiding Consciousness and changed them, adding black symbols and starry clouds to their body and a small, growing sentience to their mind.

When they finally awoke, they knew that other Hives would likely destroy a mutant semiconscious drone like themself. They drifted back to the Southern Icefield, where they came across REMNANT, once their partner in defending their old Hive. REMNANT was similarly changed by elemental magic, and the two tried to use their connections to the Hive's wavelength to fuse into one Consciousness, to moderate success. The two of them found that their unusual awakening had given them an odd distaste for using their assimilation fluid, so they sought a place to create a new Hive through traditional drone creation. They discovered Turnback Cave and haven't left since.
