     Cymophane the War Scientist

━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Without a word or really a glance, Niskai motioned at the spread of containers in front of Cymophane. “What do you think for this?” she asked.

Cymophane only glanced at the string of beads in front of Niskai. It was corn, a favorite snack of Centaurs. Though the rivalry between dragon and Centaur was deadly, Centaurs engaged in their own internal blood feuds. Some Centaurs even sought dragon assistance in these fights, though rarely.

“I’m working on a bacteria that attacks certain body filaments.” Cymophane turned to look further down the tent. “Coryza?”

The Blight Nymph flitted over, carrying a magical-looking orb of red. In the center of that orb was a blight━unlike Cymophane, she was capable of physically separating blights from the surrounding air and transporting them. “It’s not quite ready. It’s effective, but not deadly.”

“We don’t need deadly,” Niskai said. “We’re not out to kill Centaurs.”

Coryza smiled a little and nodded. “Shall I collect it all, then?”

“Not all of it. Maybe half,” Cymophane said distantly, making a few notes in his nearby notebook, just an idea that came to him. Not deadly. But perhaps they could speed the reaction of the bacteria.

Coryza gathered the blight and her magical orb grew bigger in her arms.

Niskai shook her head a little, the sparkle of Arcane power surrounding her like a mist. “Alright, this is going to take a while… but we don’t have to enchant every kernel, do we?”

Cymophane looked critically at his notes, then nodded. “It’s potent enough. Just a few will do.”

Cymophane had as pleasant a hatchlinghood as one could have in the Boneyard. He was far enough away from the Wound to escape the worst of the effects for himself while still building up an excellent immunity to the diseases that ooze and crawl around that place. Like other hatchlings of Plague, the destructive infections and viruses were his playthings.

Cymophane trained with the clan’s enchanter, using his knowledge and Plague magic to imbue items with the properties of various diseases. He lived quietly with his mate, creating portable plagues for warriors and spies to take to battle and their enemies’ clans. It wasn’t a matter of malice, it was simply his job. He knew that dragons and beasts could suffer terribly from the wrath of his creations, but if he didn’t do it then another dragon would.

And, of course, other dragons did. Cymophane is far from Sornieth’s only Plague enchanter, not the first and certainly not the last. As the war for dominance always does, fighters reached into Plague territory and their weapons turned against them. Cymophane’s clan scattered, and he found himself without a home, a family, or a job. Only when his daughter Lilika, since moved into a Wind clan called the Tempest Chase, called him did he find a new place to use his skills. Working with a crew creating enchanted weapons, Cymophane found that, of course, if he didn’t make these things, other dragons always did. Even though he was never very close with any other dragons, he withdrew further. If his weapons didn’t get him first, they’d get his friends and family. Best to not make such connections for more than immediate pleasure.

Things are a bit different these days for Cymophane. He hopes to one day find his old mates, maybe more of his children if they were not killed in some battle somewhere. He doesn’t hold out hope for that, though. The nomadic nature of the Tempest Chase does help him sleep at night: the clan is used to scattering and getting back together even if they lose some of their number. Some ask him if he’s afraid of dragons like himself, and he always says he’s not. It’s a part of life, after all. Nothing could be further from the truth.

━━ familiar ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Cymophane’s Blight Nymph Coryza is something like a lab assistant. Like others of her kind, she makes herself busy collecting blights, and Cymophane puts these to use in his horrific creations. Granted, the grand majority of their time is spent studying, not enchanting. After all, not all blights are meant to be weaponized, at least not in their current form. As when he was a hatchling, Cymophane twists and pulls at the fabric of these demented bits of life to make sure its effective before releasing it on the world. Coryza always brings them back, often changed by the environment in ways more potent than Cymophane could imagine. After all, nature is destructive, too.

━━ crew ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Although Lilika told Cymophane about the Tempest Chase, Menorca brought him there. After all, a weapons business is hardly anything to speak of without a Plague expert. They are both all business, though, pragmatic about the benefits and drawbacks of their line of work. They both tend to view dragonkind as wholly evil, or at least self-serving. Menorca doesn’t think there’s a difference, and Cymophane is inclined to agree. All the same, he’d like to think that his crew is tight knit (or at least content) enough to the point they would not sell one another out for a chance at a better life.

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Cymophane takes his last name from his profession and home region, Abidingblight.
»
» Unlike his employer, Cymophane is perfectly capable of using his own magic abilities to his advantage in a fight. He also uses combat training as a stress reliever. Though he’s never been in a battle himself, he is probably perfectly capable of joining in one.
