Kisame is a shinobi from Kirigakure. He served as a guard, but his top priority was to keep information safe, even if this meant to kill comrades. When he noticed that his superior was leaking information, he killed him and took his sword Samehada, but was left with no purpose nor direction in life.
When he was asked to join Akatsuki, he gladly accepted. Although he never really shared the same plans as Akatsuki, Kisame showed great loyalty towards his partner, Itachi, and was even assumed to only stay in the organization because of him.

Kisame seems to be the only Akatsuki that gets along well with his team partner. Kisame knows that Itachi is more intelligent and stronger than himself. Although Kisame enjoys fights and killing his opponents, he listens to Itachi and avoids fights when he asks him to.
When Itachi and Kisame found Haruka in the desert, Kisame felt it would be easier to kill the rumored 'monster' but finally agreed to Itachi's appraisement and took her along with them. His first encounter with the Amayaka Kekkei-Genkai left Kisame impressed and he actually took a liking in her, calling her „Haru-chan“ and joking around with her.
