HISTORY
The Clan of the Mourning Cairn was one that shunned magic, with only the most essential spells being used by clan officials. Everyone else relied heavily on manual labor or their own inventions, and thus it was for Kemuel. Born a Tundra, she was curious even then, always questioning the world around her. So it was inevitable that she would find much to question about the way the clan was run. This earned her a reputation as a troublemaker, more so when an accident with a traveling merchant's wares resulted in her being turned into a Snapper.

Kemuel was severely chastised for this mishap, and from that day on, her movements were greatly restricted. She barely had any privacy and was often kept busy running various mindless errands within the clan. This only increased her desire to escape from the lair, however, and learn more about the dragons, lands, and magic that lay beyond. In secret, Kemuel began fashioning a device to help her escape, a sort of flying contraption that would hopefully take her beyond the clan's borders.

After many years, Kemuel was ready to leave. Her invention worked as she had dreamed, and with it, she was able to fly away from her birth clan. She crashed somewhere in the desert, where a friendly Earth clan found her. She lived with them for a time. It was from them that Kemuel learned more about the rest of Sornieth -- including about a Light clan that was in need of a dragon crafty and daring enough to help protect some of their members. By then, Kemuel was fully grown and ready to move on. She bade her adoptive clan goodbye and journeyed to the Sunbeam Ruins, where Security Chief Aidan, impressed by her grit and cunning, recruited her as the Catacombs Warden.

Kemuel has redesigned the Catacombs to be safer for its inhabitants -- and more perilous for unlawful intruders. While her wards were very leery of her at first, in time they came to respect her, and she now has close relationships with most of them. She spends much of her life down in the darkness, but this time of her own accord. Occasionally she emerges to mingle with other dragons in the light of the sun, where her scales and jewels shine as brightly as her will does.

CHARACTER
Despite their name, the Clan of the Mourning Cairn was very much a cult, which perhaps accounts for Kemuel's strange personality. Not being sure whom to trust has made her wary of other dragons as a result, and while she can be friendly to strangers, no one ever really manages to shake off the feeling that she is analyzing their every move -- which is probably the case. Kemuel is also a very private and secretive dragon. Her eagerness to learn more about other dragons means that she quickly absorbed new information after her escape and can now discourse about a wide variety of topics. She is always pleasant and brisk, almost businesslike, during these encounters. However, it's not uncommon for dragons to finish conversing with her and find that, while they have shared much about themselves, they barely learned anything about her.

She was not born a Snapper and it took her some time to get used to her new form. While she still cannot move very fast, the long years she spent working on her flying machine helped her develop her telekinesis to an astonishing degree. Nowadays she mostly uses this to do spot repairs or to work on her pet projects, which are usually amusing and harmless (though with Kemuel, one can never really tell). Typical projects include small automatons, light sources, and recording devices.

Life in her birth clan was very austere and she didn't have much in the way of apparel. Wearing sumptuous outfits seems to be her way of making up for this. She loves bright colors, especially gem tones, and her den and office are both heavily decorated. She also wears a lot of jewelry -- not uncommon for dragons to know she's approaching because of the jangling sound it makes. When she is not away on errands, she can often be found patrolling the Catacombs, usually with the clan engineers, to inspect the defenses and make sure they're in working order. She will also frequently chat with the inhabitants to get a better picture of how things are going for them.

Her traps are wildly creative and variable, and she has earned a reputation for ruthlessness. It took her wards some time to realize she wasn't as cruel as she appeared, but when they did, they learned to appreciate her all the more. They often keep her company when she is doing night shifts, bringing her food and drinks and chatting with her. They will also (with her encouragement) enthusiastically groan about how cold-blooded she is to any visitors they don't quite trust. This quickly convinces them that Kemuel is not a dragoness to cross. They are correct -- but despite the nature of her work and the reputation she cultivates, Kemuel is nonetheless capable of great magnanimity. Her own rocky past makes her particularly sympathetic towards similarly troubled dragons, even those not under her care, and while she finds it difficult to express sympathy, her blunt, practical advice comes entirely from goodwill, and often works in favor of those who are willing to hear it.

RELATIONSHIPS
28748526p.png Taueret | Deputy
The headstrong Taueret didn't really like Kemuel at first, thinking her to be entirely heartless, but this changed when Kemuel's true nature slowly came to light. From continually arguing with her, Taueret has since become Kemuel's deputy, and she also assists in inspecting the defenses and helping fellow Catacombs tenants. They still argue from time to time, but not as often or as vehemently as they did before.
51314308p.png Sirrush | Page
This Imperial arrived from Windkeep Tower as a stowaway aboard the Exaudi. Kemuel caught him sneaking into the Catacombs, and after making some arrangements with his birth clan, Sirrush was allowed to join the Disillusionists. He now works as the Catacombs Page, running errands for the inhabitants and delivering news and items to them.
50709464p.png Delver | Catacombs Maintenance
This engineer specializes in maintaining the Catacombs defenses. He mostly takes orders from Kemuel, but will occasionally wander around and do repairs and maintenance on his own. He doesn't seem to be particularly unsettled by Kemuel, or if he does, he never really shows it.
30114429p.png Rhadamanthes | Ward, Assistant
A foreboding beast with a past even more troubling than Kemuel's -- and a soul that is now much softer. Due to his otherworldly nature, Rhadamanthes doesn't really need much sleep, and he can be relied on to handle most of the night shift himself if Kemuel needs backup.
31129731p.png Kundalini | Ward
Kundalini tries to spend much of her time awake, to keep her embedded Shade fragment from wreaking havoc in people's dreams. Kemuel knows this and frequently sits up to chat with her. She will also stay nearby when she senses that Kundalini is particularly troubled, to at least try and make sure she can rest more easily.

STATS & ABILITIES
combat1-2.png
Kemuel never learned to fight. She doesn't seem inclined to learn either, preferring instead to place her faith in the defenses she's built around her lair. Some of these can actually be quite nasty, though there is still the risk that there will be dragons crafty or powerful enough to break through them.
_______________________________________
vitality1-5.png
Not a very quick or energetic dragon. Kemuel is patient and slow-moving, but after a particularly bad night, she can be lethargic, almost listless. She tries to hide her exhaustion, and it is mostly thanks to the assistance of her clan, particularly her wards, that she can recover quickly.
_______________________________________
magic1-3.png
Due to the cult she grew up in, Kemuel's magical abilities aren't too strong. What she does excel in is telekinesis, using her willpower to manipulate tools for even the most delicate operations. She has learned to rely on magical items and can assess, use, and defend against most of these, despite having next to no magic herself.
_______________________________________
intelligence1-10.png
An innately brilliant dragon, almost frighteningly so. Kemuel's restrictive upbringing only made her hungrier for more knowledge, and she studied and learned as much as she could after she left her birth clan. While some practical applications, such as higher magics, are beyond her, she absorbs information very easily. She is also quite shrewd in her assessment of people and objects, and her clanmates have learned to rely on her judgment.
_______________________________________
charisma1-2.png
Kemuel takes her job as Warden seriously and, to discourage visitors to the Catacombs, she maintains her blunt, probing attitude. Still, it must be said that even if she didn't do this, other dragons would find it hard to warm up to her. Her speech is always formal, coldly practical, and she isn't much for sympathetic musings. She comes across as downright cold-blooded even when she's not trying to appear that way.
_______________________________________
luck1-7.png
Kemuel's early life was filled with hardship, but things greatly changed for the better once she left her birth clan. While she still works hard and applies the utmost prudence to everything she does, she is nonetheless more fortunate than most -- a great asset in her line of work, with so many dragons relying on her for protection.
