To keep the demands of the dragons that use the Lightning flight's electricity met, there must always be a dragon monitoring the work done in the factories and power plants. However, the issue in this is that no dragon, no matter how much or how many methods they use to keep themselves awake for just a minute or two longer, can go through with many consecutive all-nighters in such a stressful work environment. Swapping out employees in managerial roles can be expensive and time-consuming as well, given the amount of labor needed to run every facility. There is a simple solution to this, one that pays off far more than it costs; create a construct, a flawless machine made of steel and wire rather than flesh and blood. DWN-082, known more commonly by Fuse, is the most recent edition of these electricity-controlling robots. He's a dragon in all other ways but the chip that his personality and memories are stored to, and the oily black liquid flowing through his veins instead of blood. For his whole life, from activation to now, he has mostly known only of his orders. Observe. Regulate. Repair. It was a simple existence, and one with little issue besides the scatterbrained employees he worked with, but never spoke to. When he was not required to walk through the arrays of Tesla coils and spires of copper, he often stood hooked up to wires in his room, charging the facility itself and observing through the various monitors on the wall. Only a single window, broken up with bars of rubber covered iron, allowed him to see the desert outside. Until another robot broke free of his wires, he hadn't thought of running away. His speed was unrivaled; where another dragon could fly, 082 was said to be able to move as fast as lightning itself, at least when it came to catching someone slacking off on the job. Fuse had seen that robot once before. A somewhat older model, built with more freedoms in mind; a war machine, a civilian dragon, all of these rolled into one. That model, the prototype 000, had discovered a flaw in security and forced his way inside the power plant at hearing of the isolated dragon inside. He struck up a friendship, using the limited resources inside to get to know this Fuse. Fuse, as it turned out, lacked personality of his own beyond a few basics that were necessary to have a 'sentient' machine. He was perfectly obedient and would not- perhaps could not- question orders, no matter how he disliked them or found them pointless. He knew little of the outside world, and generally preferred not to listen to conversations the other employees had. 000 began to tell stories of the outside, of verdant forests and icy hellscapes and bright blue seas. Some of these colors were ones that Fuse had sworn he had never once seen before, outside of the scales of other dragons. The most important thing of all, was that he had learned 000's 'true' name, like his own. Blues. A rhyme. He'd asked what the word meant, for Blues was not blue- he was rather grey, with red scales dotting his body. It only elicited a laugh, as the concept of 'music' was introduced to him. Soon, he could not live without music. Even as he did his work, he would hum a tune that he'd heard over the airwaves, or tap his claws to a new beat. Although his work was as diligent as ever, his creator found this behavior undesirable. Of course, his creator was not the Stormcatcher himself; despite his extreme affinity with electricity, his creator was a dragon like any other, whose faults were his and only his. This inventor desired only perfection from his creations. and if they were not perfect, he would rather use their imperfect parts to create a new machine. 082 was not this machine's true designation. He was not DWN-082. This was ODN-005, from a line where each robot was deactivated, destroyed, rebuilt, reactivated, and redesignated into a brand new machine. This fear in the creator was not unwarranted, as Fuse was quickly growing sick of this job and the stress on his shoulders. He rarely slept, and the anxiety and fear of things going wrong ate at his mind. Fixing everything would simply not happen, but it's all that he could worry about, and the bleak grey walls of his room were beginning to close in on him, until he decided that it was enough.. that he had had enough of this, and would happily risk his life for the chance at freedom his friend had given him, along with so much more. One day, when Blues came over, he found his partner already ready to leave, decked in armor and with lightning running in his wires. It was one look out the window and one blast of plasma to slice through the bars later, they were flying free. He now travels the continent to help with mechanical and technological issues where he can, without saying too much to most dragons. After all, he's rather blunt and rude in his honesty, and finds dragons to be 'annoying and not bound by the same laws their creations are'. Maybe that thought process will change with time. |
