Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.

Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife.

This curse would be traced down his lineage. All Vigil's children were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain.

"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before."

This is Faythe. She slipped one day while exploring the territory. She fell down a cliff and snapped her neck, but when she came back to life, her injury healed but at a slightly odd angle. Her neck has a permanent kink in it from her fall. (Gruesome, I know. Then again, her mother drowned so, this way was less painful.) Faythe has a home now... Maybe Banquo will stop telling her to leave the demons alone now.

Faythe was a normal happy hatchling. A middle child with two other sisters. They were the best of friends and did almost everything together. Frolicking through the meadows and playing in the streams. Playing like normal reckless hatchlings would.

Life was normal...ordinary...well except for one tiny tiny minor detail. Faythe can see and communicate with spirits and even befriended demons.

It started pretty harmlessly. An imaginary friend...at least that’s how her parents saw it. Surely an imaginary friend is innocent enough, all hatchlings have one, nothing to be worried about right?
Right?

Banquo always had their lineage’s curse in mind when it came to his girls. He had a bad feeling when it came to his young Faythe. Especially when she started talking about how they died. He doesn’t even fully remember his own death and yet his own daughter talks as if she witnessed it. Fear filled him like ice water when she mentioned a Neander... his daughters have never met a Neander nor are they related to one...that is until he was visited by his older brother Claeg, only when he saw his brother, something was off.

Neander...his name is now Neander. The family curse...he had seen it.

Faythe’s spirit interactions seemed to have only increased, only this one was becoming dangerous. She started talking about Dybbuk, her new imaginary friend, a hatchling like herself. They would play and pull pranks. Banquo noticed that stuff where being moved on their own or large messes were made and Faythe would blame Dybbuk. It wasn’t until one faithful day that he realized, Dybbuk was a Cursed and Faythe was in trouble.

Faythe and her sisters were out playing and Faythe was happy that Dybbuk was there but then her sisters became afraid. They were along the cliffs, the breeze was gentle, the smell of the sea, and the grass was soft. A darkness loomed, the edge was jagged, Faythe was too close, and Dybbuk’s intent was to be fulfilled. The earth caved with Faythe, her shocked face met Dybbuk’s satisfied and devilish grin before disappearing. There was no screaming...everything was too fast...and then nothing.

There was darkness, her body was light as a feather. She flouted almost weightlessly and fear gripped on her heart as she tried to remember what had happened. She didn’t know how she got here, but for certain she wanted to go home.

Within the darkness was a faint green light. It started to get brighter as it got closer and soon a spirit appeared to her, joining her in the void. It came closer to her, and asked,
"Do you wish to live?" What did it mean? Was she not already alive? This wasn’t a dream? This is too much for a hatchling.

"Yes." She said, calm like the still waters. Almost too mature for her age.

"What price would you pay?"

"Anything..." She said, the calmness in her voice is almost unnatural.

"Very well then Freyja...wake up.”

The sun was bright and the voices were getting louder. She was awakening, surrounded by her family and new familiar. Her parents and sisters cried, her uncle helped her stand. The world seemed tilted and the family gasped.

Her neck...it’s crooked. They said her name, Faythe, but that’s not her. Who is this Faythe they keep talking to?

“My name is Freyja. Who is Faythe?” The devastation wrecked her family’s hearts. Neander tried to explain to his younger brother, that sometimes the curse gives them a new name, for their new life and offered to take care of Freyja back at his clan. It wrecked her parents, her sisters were never the same, her uncle understood. She was still a hatchling and behaved like one so the gravity of the situation didn’t settle until she was older.

Gatekeeper:
When the dead interfere with the living, a Gatekeeper has to make a stand. Memento Mori come back from the very brink of death — often having been dead for minutes before their bound familiar helps them back to their own bodies. That gives some a deeper insight into the life, death, and the distinct difference between the two states. Having been in both states, some take on the role of Gatekeeper, policing the boundary between the living and the dead. At her best, a Gatekeeper is an exorcist, showing up one day to deal with a ghost or poltergeist, then moving on to confront a medium who’s been helping the dead possess dragons. Some Gatekeepers don’t want ghosts to think that they’re entirely on the side of the living, and will help resolve whatever fetters a ghost to the world.

The ship was huuuuge! Freyja would run around all day, Neander had to keep her in line so she wouldn’t get in the crew’s way. Ragnar enjoyed her wild spirit, reminded him of his many daughters. At first, she wasn’t sure why she had to leave her family and live with her uncle, but it was a new adventure. Of course there were a ton of interesting spirits around to keep her company. The sirens are really fun to talk to, especially Lorelei.

When Neander brought her to their shared room, he began to teach her lessons of their lineage and their curse. When they return they sometimes have roles; like how he became a Reaper. Freyja wasn’t sure if she was anything, but then she remembered something her bag gave her while she was dreaming...

“Freyja, as a descendant of the Momento Mori, granddaughter of Moros; I have for you this key...”

“A key?”

"Yes, this is a key that can open many doors, doorways to the spirit realm, underworld, land of the dead, whatever you call it. As a Gatekeeper, you are the catalyst to make sure the dead and living are in balance...to help spirits find their way and to keep the living safe. Do you understand?"

Freyja nodded and placed the key, tied on a leather strap, around her neck like a common necklace.

Now continues to travel with the Fleet, but she would be pulled away by spirits to take care of mischievous living messing with the supernatural.
