RETAINS SOME MEMORY
MUST REMAIN WITH CONSCIOUSNESS AT ALL TIMES
NON-EXPENDABLE
From so early, there were so many fragments.
Of memory, of pain, chaotic and disorganized.
They blurred together, fading in and out, as every fragment from that young does.
She remembered, then she didn’t.
Then she remembered.
The warm, dark, the voices, the cold.
And the light, as she opened her eyes to see…
Everything, everything was so bright, everywhere, every direction.
And the voices, they changed in tone, from loving to shocked, harsh.
Rough, careless, talons grabbed her wing, spreading it wide.
She had struggled pitifully in their grasp, but it was in vain.
The voices rose, an anger, fear.
They would always speak like that to her, she never remembered them any different.
Still young, they snarled, shouted, called her a curse.
A curse of the stars.
Their talons scarred her hide, and she learned to hide when their footsteps came near.
If she was quick and lucky, her efforts would be rewarded with enough food to keep her alive.
If she wasn’t, scrapes and bruises would be her punishment.
A reason to get faster, stronger.
But what reason, they often told her, did a curse have to live?
Much less, a curse of the stars?
Until that day, that fragment, she thought this was how life worked.
That day, when they sought her out.
They spoke in sweet voices, called her name, and offered food to the child they had struck so many times before…
And she, unfamiliar with lies, drew cautiously forward, driven by the hunger and loneliness.
Yet when she came in reach, they grabbed her, and their hatred returned.
They chained her wings and shackled her talons, muzzled her so that her needle-like teeth couldn’t reach their hides.
Then they took her away, deep into the forest, bound her to a tree...
She struggled desperately to get away, but they beat her, called her names, cursed, star cursed.
They clawed her wings with talons like blades, laughing heartlessly as she cried out in pain.
They feigned tearing out her eyes, claws shredding up her face, closer each time...
But in the shadows of the forest, something else had another plan.
It was upon them before they knew what was happening.
The first fell immediately, the snap of their neck ringing out despite the chaos of noises around.
The second too longer, sparring well, but not well enough…
They fell, just like the first, the thing’s black talons shredding through their flesh ruthlessly.
And then, the thing approached her, the cursed, broken, injured, star child…
And it… he carefully broke the chains away, lifted her into his arms.
He carried her through the woods, telling her she was safe, telling her that it was all okay.
She curled into his shoulder, shaking.
She didn’t fight the odd sensation tingling through her scales, through every vein.
The change that rippled through her, spreading black over her body and wings.
It dulled the sharp fragments of memory… but only a little.
Only so it didn’t have to hurt, not so much.
It didn’t have to hurt anymore.
They couldn’t hurt her anymore.
She, the curse of the stars, was finally safe.
She was finally home.
APPEARANCE BEFORE ASSIMILATION:
NOTES FROM RESEARCHER MATVEI:
I… I didn’t even know about this one until Defector told me about it.
I had assumed that the reason INANIS did not have a Backup was because his Hive was relatively small, thus making a backup an unnecessary burden. I mentioned this offhand to Defector, who seemed confused. She said that the Hive files clearly mentioned a Backup, much to my suprise.
She tried to access more information, but nearly all information about this mysterious DRONE was protected by a secure firewall that even Defector couldn’t breach. I can’t fathom why this Backup is so hidden away, or why INANIS would go through so much trouble to protect it…
