“Memento Mori”. Remember Death. That is the motto by which we live. For those who shun Death, fear it, will its coming be all the more unsympathetic.

No dragon knows the phrase “Memento Mori” better than Cassata, except for perhaps others of her bloodline. She can no longer remember the reason for the fight, but she does remember her death at the claws of her foe. Remembers being visited by a Seeker of Death, remembers being given an option, a chance at a new life.

Remembers accepting.

Cassata moved from her home in the Plateau’s Ascent to the Hewn City, where she found a like-minded imperial by the name of Rylen. Together they began a new clan: One where death is ever-present, and life is fleeting.

Haughty and temperamental, Cassata is not to be trifled with. Even her own mate steers clear of her in a temper. The only being who does not flee at her anger is the ever-present Death Seeker perched upon her shoulder.

She seeks knowledge of the dead, of ghosts and spirits, and will stop at nothing to find it. Often employs Alruccabah in gaining of knowledge, an oftentimes dangerous pursuit which only serves to intensify Nephelle’s animosity.

So it shall be that you have died - bones broken, burning - split between an infinite horizon, rage until the torrent plunges you under again. All things good and gold and gilt shall one day be gone; how many times must you sacrifice your own limbs, the breath and the bile; what must you do to make them speak? Your answers, tongueless, wait for you on the ruined corners of the isles, heavy-headed, empty-handed, burdened with their own mortality. What shall wait for you, deathless? How many times must I regurgitate those self-same songs? What ruin, for us? What sacrilege, for you?

Lore by SilverSilver

The ruins around you are dark and cracked, weathered with age and disuse. Fog swirls around you in the dim light, further limiting your vision in this City of darkness.

Ahead of you lies a courtyard amongst the ruins. You pause, remembering the directions given to you by the ruins’ guard.

Seek our Leader in the Courtyard. But beware, for she is not to be trifled with.

His warning plays in your mind, causing a shiver to travel down your spine.

You enter the Courtyard on wary paws and look around, hoping to spot the elusive leader. Scraggly flowers grow up between the cracks in the stone, and you eye them with curiosity. You are amazed that any plants are able to grow here at all, in this City of dying sun.

“Greetings, trespasser. What brings you to my humble clan?”

The voice, deep and sharp, comes from behind. You whirl around.

Standing before you is a Skydancer. She is all darkness, with pearled eye-shaped markings on her wings. Tatters hang from her wings and neck, covered with the skulls of long dead birds. Purple horns curving outward from her forehead give her a menacing air.

A Death Seeker sits on her shoulder. It glares at you from its living perch. As you watch, it opens its beak and lets out a loud caw.

You shiver.

The Skydancer – Cassata, the clan’s leader – eyes you with distaste. You scramble to answer her question.

“Greetings, oh mighty Leader,” you begin, sketching a low bow. A snort erupts from her nostrils.
“Do not insult me with shallow flattery,” Cassata scoffs, and the warning rings loud and clear in her voice. “What is it you seek?”

You take a deep breath. Let it out.

“I come in search of knowledge,” you say.

“Knowledge of what?”

“The Underworld.”

Cassata narrows her startlingly green eyes at you. You suppress another shiver.

“And how would you know of that?” she asks, voice sharp as her familiar’s talons.

You raise your chin in defiance. You refuse to give away all of your secrets, even to this dragon.

To your surprise, instead of slashing your throat with her deadly claws Cassata merely chuckles.

“So you refuse to tell me,” she says. “Interesting.” She thinks for a moment, before giving a short nod.

“Very well, I will grant you your knowledge. But first, trespasser, tell me this.” She grins, a wicked thing that puts her maw of razor-sharp teeth on full display.

“What do you know about death?”

Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.

Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife.

This curse would be traced down his lineage. All Moros' children were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain.
