Biography
Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits. Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife. This curse would be traced down his lineage. All Vigil's children were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain. Desino had sworn to himself to never make his father's mistakes. He had seen the strange transformation, though none knew the reason behind it. All anyone knew was that Desino's father had come back seemingly unscathed from an unwinnable battle, and his eyes held an empty rage that never seemed to dissipate. Yet, here Desino was, on the battlefield in his father's stead. He would never had been a fighter if he had never met Meg. The fiery, wickedly clever, and surprisingly ferocious Fae had captured his attention and his loyalty, and now it seemed they would die together on the battlefield. Most of the memory was a blur. He heard Meg cry out, looked over to see her scratching vainly to ward off the massive Hydra bearing down on her. He darted over to guard...then...mist? Mist was everywhere. The sky had changed too, darker than it had been just a second ago. He looked around wildly for Meg, but the mist was so dense... The only thing visible was a statue. As Desino looked upon it, somehow it spoke without moving it's mouth. The low monotone filled Desino's head. 'She will be alright. Your sacrifice gave her enough time to flee.' He nearly slumped with relief, before another thought occurred to him, sinking his stomach with dread. "Sacrifice? You mean..." 'You are dead.' the statue spoke, nothing but cold detachment in it's toneless rumble. 'But for you, that does not have to be permanent. What would you do to live again?' Desino blinked, and a memory of his charge surfaced in his vision, of Meg clinging to the back of his neck, laughing as she blinded him with her technicolor wings. She was everything important in this world, how could he watch over her if he wasn't there? He couldn't leave her behind. "Anything."
