Find me
I will take away the burdens on your shoulders and make them mine. I will offer you a smile to put you at ease; and veil the truths that you would not wish to see. I invite your dependence and draw from your desires until it all finally comes to catch me; leaving nothing behind but a shell.

My hands are forever stained in red. Love me and I will paint you in the same colors; holding you close for an eternity. Find me and I will be yours in earnest. Turn away from me and you will never see me again.

THE SAPPHIRE PRINCE
secretive | methodical | charming

sadist
The heir to the East. The charming crown prince of Zhengyu, its Tengku Kmeria. On the surface Katar is gentle and approachable; equipped with a sunny disposition and a soft-spoken voice. He has the tendency to draw one in with his words and quietly move the world around him as well as that of others; often without notice. The young prince inherited his meticulous wits from his mother and his questionable underlying nature from his father.

He is individual born of an unnatural ideal forced upon him by his mother. The person beneath is buried beneath and between the layers upon layers. Words are an empty, fleeting thing from a life's existence as a slate wiped half clean. In truth, the reality is that his actions speak truer than the rest of him. They are the nigh invisible nuances that give way to his faults and foibles; his sins and sincerity.

Somewhere along the way, he has begun to lose sight of himself and his emotions. Donning the various masks required--and expected--of him, Katar is nearing the brink of forgetting which is one real, or if any of it is real at all. Set on a painful, predetermined path in life, his inner compass spins aimlessly in place with nothing else to guide him along save the inevitable.

He is currently travelling as an ambassador while still making time to check in on his many siblings to ensure that they are doing well. They are dear to him, or so he wants to believe.

» Katar is the closest being to his mad sister, Regalia. Very few can quell nor contain her, but his words have a way of reaching her even at her worst. He relies on her as much as she has come to rely on him. She is like a pane of frosted glass that bears no reflection for him to see himself. Things are only what they are and can be, simple and unchanging.

» Formerly friends with Silas and the two used to share a brother-like bond when they were younger. At the time, Silas had been the only one who didn't see the "young heir" in Katar, and therefore hadn't been caught up in all the airs and graces. However, the two had become increasingly distant since then.

» Overall seems dependable, plus a little more down to earth than most of his kind. Added to that, he's strong and savvy enough to maintain considerable respect; enough to negate any foolishly mistaken notions of weakness.

» As a brother: To his siblings, especially the younger ones, he appears personable and quick to spend time with them as well as to humor them or hide their mistakes. In short, he enjoys doting on them.

» Prefers to refer to his younger siblings as "brother" or "sister" rather than "little brother" or "little sister" to let them know he holds them in high regard. He goes out of his way to further mask his feelings and any problems to ensure that it does not affect any of them negatively.

» He is able to play several instruments, but his favorite (or at least the one he is more often seen with) is a wooden flute known as a "dizi."

Hmm. The Tengku Kmeria? He is strong and reliable. Though, I recall things being very different from how they are now... I still trust him to lead the way. *He seems distant as if lost in a memory, the passing thought causes him to briefly knit his brows before sharply focusing back to how he was before.*

58672620.png
SUNTETSU
*He smiles, and his amber eyes glow with fondness. It alone seems to say all that needs saying.* Katar... Sometimes, I feel as though there'll never be enough time to know all there is of him.
He's shown me many things, and now that he has that driving conviction for himself, I don't believe there is anything that can stop him- and I'll stand by him all the way.

Katar is my dear brother and my closest ally, and his help in my life has been invaluable... if not fashionably late. *He laughs quietly.* I have faith that if he grows to lead us all someday that he'll be more pleasant to be around than my mother. But don't tell her I said that.

SUNTETSU
( VoK8GzD.png ) Stranger: He had noticed Suntetsu as one would notice words within the pages of a book. Something that existed as reference to be cited or considered for another time when appropriate. The brother of one of Akaneiro’s leaders, was it?
( IpFLLDZ.png ) Acquaintance: They exchange names and formalities. Suntetsu, a diplomatic representative of this clan. He seems friendly and capable. They take tea together and converse aimlessly over empty pleasantries despite Suntetsu’s obvious sincerity. He considers it an anomaly that someone could be so open, silently noting that it will likely come back to bite Suntetsu one day as a weakness; then thinks nothing more of it--or him--again.
( YKtG8l9.png ) Curiosity: After several more encounters, Katar discovers that he finds his reactions endlessly entertaining. Suntetsu is expressive and every bit of it is as you see. Katar subjects him to a variety of elaborate practical jokes; often humorous, sometimes dangerous and always barely likely enough that one could almost consider it all a coincidence. This man is a curiosity to him in all that he is and in the manner in which he naturally approaches life.
( RKsr7nu.png ) Friend: He never even noticed when they crossed the threshold of curiosity to that of friendship. It was something that happened somewhere along the way, a transition so narrow and thin that it passed him by. Before he knew it, he found himself enjoying his company for what it was. Their strange travels to and fro for work, suddenly he did not mind it all so much.

( AqoUoLO.png ) Close: That night in which they were meant to meet... He could smell the blood on Suntetsu. He carried it well and held it all together--it left Katar with no opening to pry. Their titles still kept them worlds apart despite their friendship. Without even knowing why, he decided to spend the entirety of the evening drawing the truth to the surface. Who hurt Suntetsu and why? In light of the events that followed, he struck a devil’s deal so that he could stay and ensure Suntetsu’s safety with his own two hands. It was something that Katar knew he would surely pay for; however, the decision was made knowingly and his fate offered freely. He feels neither dread nor regret, instead he is facing forward and focused on the task at hand. When did Suntetsu become so important to him?
( bodYIuc.png ) Lover: A confession? He listened to Suntetsu, who seemed himself. His words are spoken calmly, coherently and they were well thought out. Everything is as he knows it to be, save for the topic at hand. Katar doesn’t know how he feels, if he feels anything at all. Does he care about Suntetsu? Of course. That is undeniable now; but how much and how little--that... was something he couldn’t answer. His own emotions were always a mess. How could Suntetsu have feelings for something he doesn’t understand? Perhaps he’s fallen for a mask? Still, he decides to humor him and looks to offer him a good experience until he realizes what it is that he truly wants. You cannot love something you do not know; and Katar does not know himself, he couldn’t expect Suntetsu to either. As long as they can at the very least remain friends he’ll be content, or so he tells himself. Unbeknownst to Katar, he has already been drawn in past the point where he can return. Fragments of his heart have already been given away, slipping through his fingers and into Suntetsu’s hands with the quiet, unspoken wish that he doesn’t let them go.

( zvanmji.png ) Obsession: Hah... He exhaled hotly as he felt the back of his mind burning. He couldn't recall a single moment in which he desired something for himself--something to jealously call his own and no other. Not like this. It was as if all of the pale emptiness that had been behind him had suddenly rushed forward and caught him within a single terrible impulse. All because of the sight of that around Suntetsu's neck, embedding the idea in his mind that he could have him completely. Katar felt possessed. This was not what he wanted for him. He felt that he needed to resolve the matter for both of them before things take a deeper hold, and he does something in which he might come to regret... This lurid obsession. Why couldn't he look away? Never had his restraint been so low. He mustn't let anyone find out... especially not Suntetsu.
( b5KnQv4.png ) Devotion: Suntetsu is asleep, the fringe of his bangs casting a soft curtain over his peaceful, resting face. He's showered in warm sunlight, a square of it catching his face, his shoulders, the pattern of red maiden flowers encircling his neck. The rise and fall of his even breathing continues safely undisturbed beneath the red and gold of Katar's coat.

A brush to his face; even deep in sleep, he turns towards the touch. He stirs gently into the warmth of Katar's shoulder before settling peaceably into him, sighing as if comforted.

» Katar is a young princeling not yet having taken up ambassadorial duties. He works from within the manor where he manages Zhengyu's administrative work.

» His mind and emotions, while far from clear, are still at the better point of his life. Everything remains manageable as he stays barely a step ahead of his training and intense conditioning.

» He remains at a tipping point; still lost and looking only ahead at a short term future. The scales are so finely balanced now that it could all change overnight.

» Azalea’s newly appointed second in command, Suntetsu, is assigned as the prince’s personal guard from time to time. Katar initially treats the knight as a source of entertainment and stress relief, enjoying his earnest reactions.

━━━━ ❈ ⁎ ❈ ━━━━

“Suntetsu?”

He turns to the knight with a smile, then grabs his hand and breaks into a run, whisking him along. Just around the corner echoes the sound of rapidly approaching footsteps. Iris’ private guard with Coeur at their lead. His little sister was surely more than a little displeased, if not incredibly incredulous over the suspicious nature of the masked match.

They sped down the halls, weaving between guests and spectators alike; above chairs and under the tables--Out the door with a crash, fleeing into the district itself with a fleet of white banners trailing hot at their heels. Katar leads Suntetsu headfirst into the chaotic heart of the market itself, his hand tightly holding onto his.

Faster, further and swiftly along. A crowd suddenly gives way to a stall that for all intents and purposes should not be there--in the middle of the road and the thick of things. He pulls the knight into an unexpected sharp turn, and together they narrowly avoid the collision.

He calls out to Suntetsu to jump only a second before doing so himself. A loud crash can be heard as several of the White Guard tumble into the stall from before. Side by side, they now skim across the rooftops; and from the corner of his eye Katar can see Coeur racing the streets with a hardened determination.

Both of them are shielded only by the masks they wore. The moon betrays them tonight, casting their image to the world below. Alongside that it also betrays the mirth and merriment shining out from the prince’s eyes as he looks back to ensure his companion is not far behind.

» Katar visits the newly opened Akaneiro, acting as Zhengyu's ambassador and its crown prince. He is polite, well travelled and carries with him a certain charm. Despite his warm demeanor, the world is held entirely at arms length as he wanders and weaves between those seeking to curiously pry their way beneath the surface.

» As he takes in the sights and sounds between his duties, he finds an unusual case among not only the Akaneiro, but that of their kind. It had taken form in an individual by the name of Suntetsu, who was suffering from an unknown illness. Some manner of curse, they called it? Katar takes a practical interest and decides to spend some time to learn more about it--rather than him.

» Gradually, his attention had shifted without him knowing and he finds himself trying to pull Suntetsu away from fulfilling the last wishes of those around him and into living life in earnest. He had become tired of watching him live as if he is about to die, is what he tells himself. Katar reaches out--not realizing that he had become entangled in the process.

» Determined to rail against the idea of an incurable illness, he sets forth in stubbornly paving a path within the dark, challenging all that he knows including his own fate. Katar becomes willing to drag down even the ancestors themselves from their places in history if need be. Anything to achieve this insane and unlikely goal; or if it can keep Suntetsu alive for even just one more day.

━━━━ ❈ ⁎ ❈ ━━━━

(You’re afraid of falling asleep...)
(I am too.)

He steps away from Suntetsu’s side, having seen that he’d been lulled to sleep by the melody of the flute. From there, he makes his way to a nearby window where a distant moon hangs in the sky overhead. Bright and beautiful, without a single star to accompany it. It reaches him for the wrong reasons. He no longer sees it for what it is; but instead, he finds the lonesome image of Suntetsu looking up at it burned into his mind.

In such a short time, the world and everything he’d known had changed with Suntetsu as its cause. He sensed that at some point during the whirl of mixed emotions, he’d been tethered by a single red thread. Little by little, there became more and more of them; one seemingly delicate and wayward strand at a time until he had become completely bound. It was the first time in a long time Katar could recall being so lucid in his waking hours, no longer the amalgamation of fragmented masks and misplaced expectations; and yet... he found the experience to be far more terrifying than it was liberating.

He was aware that he was on the brink of experiencing true loss for the first time. A deep, tender happiness that would be followed soon by an equal sorrow if he did not act. It was the only thing he’d known to be real. When--no. If Suntetsu were to go, then these threads would become the chains that drag him down, separating a part of him forever from the rest. Even then, knowing this, Katar could not bring himself to regret. He suspected that he would have wandered eternity as a ghost otherwise, and thankful that if he were to die then at least he would die a real death than never having lived at all. At least, these were his sentiments now while his heart and mind were still one. The reality he chose to look away from could be very well different, and with that he placed it firmly behind a closed door for another time.

Right now he had to focus.

(I will not let you die a ridiculous death.)

» Katar never takes on ambassadorial duties. Instead, his place is in Zhengyu where he works under the watchful eyes of those around him. Though many would call him a friend, he never comes to return the same sentiment.

» He succumbs to the stress and pressure of his mother's relentless training. The result leads him to murder both his parents and taking up the mantle of Hari Kmeria in one of the worst possible manners for towards his psyche.

» He's fighting a losing battle, attempting to keep himself and the world around him together at the same time. As the Hari Kmeria, his work and efficacy is second to none; as Katar, he is closer than ever to losing the person beneath the mask.

» Suntetsu appears in his life as a recently promoted Azalea knight. For better or for worse, Katar begins to retrace the broken fragments of his past because of him, unaware of Suntetsu's true motives for being there.

━━━━ ❈ ⁎ ❈ ━━━━

He didn't notice he was being followed. It’s been a while since he’d gone out, everything feels overwhelming to his senses. Internally, everything is everywhere, he tightens his reigns over the emotions and keeps them close.

Eventually, he goes from the bustle of Zhengyu to the outskirts, disappearing into the dark of the trees. At first it is nothing but a maze, one in which few would confidently find their way. But then a dim glow gives way--pockets of star moss emanating a faint light.

They leave a trail, perhaps deliberately planted at some point or another. Though they seem unkept and have spread out since, growing a bit wild--but most certainly leading to something if one were to assess it with a discerning eye.

There, it takes him to a clearing, one he knew well. The moon is bright and shines down upon him. He feels freer, he thinks. Does he? It’s hard to tell. But he wants to go through the motions, retracing the steps of himself as if it would help him find something.

Everything he’d done tonight was walking an old road. One of many, but this one specifically called to him. Katar finds his way up, stepping from stone to stone until it brings him a little higher and closer to the sky. He dances a dance alone, one that had been known to buy him a moment’s peace. Was it working? Yes. No? A little.

His movements slow to a halt when he notices a curious little flower peering shyly through the cracks. Bending down, he reaches for it--hesitating briefly as if afraid to damage it. No, for him it is not worth it. Though, perhaps another might appreciate it. Life is fleeting, and there may not be an opportunity to see it again. He bends the stem gingerly between his fingers, taking it with him.

Regalia? No, they are all the same to her. No matter what he brings her, she won’t know the difference. Briefly, he thinks of the knight. Why? Hm. He is foreign, it may not be something he knows. But why show him? Don’t know. Does it matter? The flower is already in his hand, he cannot put it back anyway. Maybe it is a whim, but it brings him a little more quiet in his heart to share something in earnest.

The next day he is not at his study, but nor does he tell the knight that. There is a book with a note addressed to Suntetsu. A book of flowers, ordinary enough... save for the real one tucked between the pages.

I could have been anyone else
All those empty rooms
I chose one in which to make my bed
Aimlessly, I closed the door
Knowing that I left something of someone on the other side to keep you entertained
To keep the world moving forward without me
From there I fell into a sleep that offered me no dream and no relief
I had shone only with the light you had given me

...
...
...

There was never anything left for me
I had lived a short and sweetened fantasy
One that came abruptly to an end as quickly as it had begun
Whose story could have only ever been a tragedy

Yet I let myself fall into your depths anyway
There I extinguished myself, holding these precious embers close, the glass shards against my chest
These memories... The curse that bound me to you
My treasures and my pain
Two sides of the same coin

I could not tell you if it would have been better if we never met
I leave you with a quiet melody that no one else can hear, an echo of my heart before I'm gone and I set you free
My last wish to you
Before what's left is divided among everyone else
I love you like the sun.

If only I had been anyone else
Perhaps things could have ended differently
Now I see no light, only the colour white
I mistake the humming sound of dissonance for a peaceful silence
I trust you not to follow my shadow
To instead, be guided by the light that you've always had
I loved you like the sun.

Goodbye, Suntetsu.

I entered a room alone
Knowing that the door would close behind me
From there the only way out is an open window whose light is bright
Or so I think
Perhaps it is my eyes that have gone
But instinctively, I know that it will lead nowhere back
Should I go, it will separate us an eternity

Do I stay? Or do I go?
Was there ever a choice? Or will I fall apart before then?
A fault of my hesitations, my reservations
To preserve something and save someone whose name had never been called
That other half of me, perhaps even my entirety
I take a step forward

...
...
...

And then you called out to me, telling me to wait
You pried the door open with no explanation that I could understand
Only telling me to wait for you
I found myself turning away
Away from the window so that I could see your face
Perhaps it is my eyes that have gone
But I could have sworn that I saw you cry

Your eyes are dry, then what was it that I saw?
It doesn't matter, you called my name
So I will wait for you, until the last of the flame whispers to a nothing
And I am left in the room alone
Then too will the window close alongside the door
Whereupon I will be left within the dark with nowhere to go

Is that better? Or is that worse?
It doesn't matter, you called my name
So I will wait for you, until there is nothing left of me
I shine only with the light you gave me
I will wait for you.

» Though his rule is prosperous and he is kind to those around him, he finds himself in the midst of a power struggle within his own family. The dagger in the back causes him to descend further down. He is torn between not wishing to harm his siblings and rapidly losing the sense of normalcy that he had been clinging to.

» Having tried all avenues to resolve things peacefully, something in Katar fully snaps. He comes to the conclusion that it is he that might be the problem. He decides that it is he who is incoherent with the world and begins to change himself entirely. Reinventing himself, he permanently damages his ability to form bonds with others in the process. He becomes ruthless and efficient, nothing else.

» Suntetsu comes in contact with the new Hari Kmeria. His curiosity and his desire to understand people leads him to a backwards trail into the past. Unfortunately, too little, too late. What remains of Katar only seeks to utilize him as a tool to secure the greater good of Zhengyu. Though he does not mistreat Suntetsu, he isolates him in order to create something to maintain the prosperity of the future.

(It’s over...)

He calls Suntetsu to his side as he’s bleeding out on the ground. His time has come and he’s been outmatched. Katar smiles at him, looking so genuinely happy that it's all over. His eyes are unfocused and it's as if it's hard to separate the pain from the relief. But when he sees Suntetsu... and knows that, that one horrible wish has been placed within his care... He feels like he can let go.

Nothing else matters. Nothing ever did. Only this. It is what he sacrificed everything for. It is what others wanted him to sacrifice for, or pushed him to. Katar recalls Regalia’s last moments. He could see her eyes changing. They were taking on a new light as her brows furrowed in distress at the sight of him. In the end he couldn’t hide his pain from her. He couldn’t protect her from the world.

(Regalia...)

His sister’s madness had wrapped her within satin and silk. She was--and is--an innocent soul. In her eyes, he saw no reflection of his own. It became the only solace he could find, gazing into the depths of an empty naivete and seeing nothing in return. There was only the brightness of the moon, and whatever else had caught her eye. The both of them were always alone, perhaps in different ways, but lonely all the same.

(Forgive me.)
(Go while you still know no pain.)
(I can’t protect you forever.)
(This world has nothing to offer you.)

Taking his sister’s life, Katar rips apart the last of his heart. She has become one less thing that could be used against him. She cannot wake and see him differently. And... he can keep the memory of her as she was; a broken shard to carry with him going as he steels himself for the path ahead.

Now as he lay dying, he doesn't attempt to see into another life where things could have been better. He cannot fathom how Suntetsu's devotion and sincerity could have changed the course of everything. The concept was too warped--too far removed. It's only knowing that Suntetsu was willing to carry on the greater good in his stead that Katar finds any kind of peace in. It was the closest he could ever understand to what it means to be unconditionally loved. While he dies on a sea of regrets, none of it consumes him because of it.

» Katar is the heir of a fallen clan, with his home and responsibilities no more, he focuses himself on looking after his sister, Regalia, hoping to find a cure for her madness so that she may lead a normal, independent life.

» His motivations eventually lead him to a mountain supposedly inhabited by fearsome demons, along with the demon god himself. Largely untouched and uninfluenced by man, the mountain proves to be a promising place for medicinal resources for him to cultivate and experiment where all else had failed.

» One day he comes across and trail of blood and footprints, leading him to an injured Suntetsu. Katar tends to him, realizing that he had not only been the one observing him over the course of the past week, but also a demon.

» Having grown closer and luring out Suntetsu into plain sight, their unusual friendship takes for an additional turn when Katar learns of a group of adventurers coming to slay the demon god--and the supposed demon god--Suntetsu, wholly intends to allow them to do just that.

(Ridiculous.)

That was the manner in which he would describe both Suntetsu and how he planned to resolve the situation. Had Suntetsu really intended to allow others to kill him for the sake of show? At first Katar had wanted to believe that perhaps Suntetsu underestimated mankind, and while he would agree that the possibility of their permanent success was unlikely, it was still not something he would wish to leave to chance. It was then a darker sentiment had shown through. That it did not matter to Suntetsu if they succeeded or not, he was willing to accept what Katar saw as an unreasonable death if it came to him.

The discussion was over. He would not hear of more. Without another word, Katar turned away from Suntetsu and began making his way down the mountain and back into town. What he returned with the following day was... a neatly wrapped box adorn with colors of a simple design, inviting Suntetsu to open it. Within it was a beautiful, long-sleeved coat.

He coaxes Suntetsu into wearing it, then gestures for him to follow under the reasoning that it could be the last time that they meet, especially if his soon-to-be killers proved to be successful. Life is short and full of the unexpected, he wants to show him something. At the very least, it will be a fond memory either way. Suntetsu would have plenty of time and opportunity to redon his appearances as the demon god and confront them.

Katar leads him through a path of winding trees and to an open clearing. They spend a short while speaking of nothing important, and it is not long before Suntetsu confronts him as to the reason why they're here. As he's doing so, Katar holds something out in his hand. A bright little flower, whose colors beam up at him.

A rustling sound suddenly gives way to the very group of adventurers that had come to slay him. It is... almost as if someone had known that they would take this particular route. But could that be? One look at Katar could confirm anyone's suspicions. He had not been the least bit surprised at their arrival, though his words had claimed to be.

He greets them cheerfully and placates their concern, seemingly unawares that a demon god lives here at all. Rather, he is simply here to find a rare flower for his beloved in order to celebrate their first anniversary together, but will be more than certain to leave soon now that he knows. Though... while they're on the subject, he did recall seeing something that matched the description of a would be demon god somewhere on the other side of the mountain. A description that did not at all match the image of Suntetsu who stood beside him dressed fit for a romantic outing, a rare flower in hand included.

As the group turns away and sheepishly apologizes for interrupting their intimate moment, Katar turns his head to Suntetsu, closes his eyes and then smiles an innocent smile.

"Happy anniversary, Suntetsu."
