The Firebreather
A Tale of Trust Lost
I have wandered for quite some time. My pads are sore, and my wings fare just as poorly. My mane is matted, and my scales are dull. If one were to only look upon my tattered body, they would say I was indeed a miserable sight to behold, and that surely I’m not happy. Yet, if they looked into my eyes, they would see the light of adventure there, and would know the truth. I chose this life, and I’m exactly where I want to be. At least, that’s what I would have said a fortnight ago.
I have seen many great things with this Child of Ice, and I’m not alone. Three others travel by my side, all young and naive compared to myself if our Mother of Light is indeed correct in her judgement. She said I showed great promise, as I may have been a child of hers, yet I had mastered fire, another element belonging to another Mother. Yet I still believe I have much to learn, as this fire isn’t easy to control, and I’ve signed the manes of my companions many times.
Megumi forgives me for my incidents, even with hardly a tuft of hair on her tail from the last attempt to light the way through the night. Hyoko and Noroi are another story. One snaps at me, almost as if the fire had lit a flame of rage within her. The other stares at me icily, as if he pitied a false attempt to melt a heart of ice lodged deep beneath his scales. I like to believe Megumi is right when she says they’ll change eventually, but that hope dwindles as we travel.
The Child of Ice, however, seems particularly interested in my power. He says our Mother was right to tell me I’m a promising young dragon, and has even admitted that he wished his own Father felt the same. I can understand his sour tone. After all, he is one of the Gaolers, yet his fur is sleek, and his frame thin. He has not the stocky build of the battle-ready beasts I’d heard of in old legends when I had just hatched. However, while he may not be built for battle, he still shows worth through his own intelligence. While his brothers and sisters went to war, he made allies.
He has shown us these allies already, each more impressive than the last. Some were great dragons, some of which seemed perfectly capable of toppling mountains if they felt even the slightest whim to do so, and easily mistakable for the mountains they have flattened. Some were a wise pack of wolves, who seemed glad to see our small group accompanying the Gaoler. They treated the slender one as if he were part of the pack, and some even asked why he couldn’t stay and run with them, chasing the sun and the moon. A herd of massive Centaurs, with great strength and intelligence, had even left one of their own, their strongest member named Svadilfari, to aid the Gaoler.
We are currently in the land of the Wind Father, and his serpentine children dance in the sky above as our slender guide tells us about them. They may appear small, but if they descended from the storm above, I’m sure they’d rival even myself in length. He has shared many things with the four of us, and I’m as eager to speak with the serpents as Megumi was the wolves, or Hyoko the massive giants of Earth. It is when I open my mouth to ask about the great serpents when Noroi speaks.
He asks when we’ll see the Gaoler’s own land. The others seem excited, and while the thrill of travel floods through me, something feels wrong. Our guide stated that he would take us to his home immediately, and it took Megumi herself to convince him to wait a night so we could rest. Before we left, he called us together to give our small group a name. We’ve all come to trust the slender Gaoler.
So why has the mighty Svadilfari left us…?
I cannot help this sense of foreboding that freezes my limbs, that even my flames will not warm us in the land of Ice.
I can see the dawn, and even here, I can feel the Ice freezing my pads as I rise.
It is too late to voice my doubts now.
I am Asiah, one of four Children of Light that belong to the small exploration group Fenrir, and I’m not so sure about my trust in Loki anymore.
