old lore (no longer canon) wrote:
It began with a tree.
A very large tree. A coastal redwood, or Sequoia sempervirens, growing in entirely the wrong place for no easily discernible reason. In fact, it was impossible for the tree to even be there - redwood trees grow in the Southern Icefield, the Tangled Woods, the Viridian Labyrinth or the Sunbeam Ruins. Not the Scarred Wasteland. It made literally no sense and yet, there it was. Alone, more than eighty metres tall, quite happily taking up the virulent Plague soil/equivalent, and blocking probably the best location for a lair in miles. It was weird. It was inconvenient. It had to go. But...it was impressive. That the tree had grown here in the first place, that it had survived and, indeed, thrived this long - that commanded respect. To simply cut it down would be almost blasphemous; no, that was not an end befitting such a tenacious plant. They wanted to give the tree a second chance. So, naturally, they turned to reanimation magics and brought the tree to life. Because why the hell not. And so this is the reason why there's a 260-foot spiral-like dragon thing that spends most of its time encircling the lair's main entrance. It was literally there first. Also, it's actually a more productive member of the clan than many of the flesh-and-blood dragons; able to transport more or less anything, does not in fact feel pain, basically counts as agriculture due to its large populations of birds, insects, small mammals and parasitic plants. Its roles therefore include feeding and protecting the clan, and moving injured and/or dying imperials far, far away from their kin. An Emperor will never again coalesce here. |
