Biography
Harangue "By your hand is the only end I foresee." |
Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits. Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife. Fortuna Caeca Est line Harangue has always been a peculiar dragon. Born with the ability to destroy anything and everything, he was a hard child to care for. He travelled from clan to clan, always being outcast due him losing control of his powers easily. When he reached adulthood, he stopped going to clans, choosing a life of solitude. However, he started getting... episodes. Episodes where he didn't remember anything but waking up surrounded by destruction. He tried to isolate himself even further, alas, to no avail. Something in his mind snapped, and gone was the original Harangue, destroyed by his own ability. All that was left was a ravenous, destructive creature with no goal other than destroy, destroy, destroy. Like an emperor, he became a zombie-like harbinger of death and despair. Years passed by with Harangue in this beastly state, destruction in his wake. Nothing could stop him, nothing could touch him, and all he knew was a feral hunger for destruction. Something went wrong. Just as his powers had destroyed his mind, they started destroying his body, painfully decaying it bit by bit until it couldn't hold itself anymore. As he lay there, dying, some part of his consciousness was able to fight its way through his feral state, only having the chance now that he was weak and with one foot in the grave. "No," he thought, "I want to live!" A ghostly apparition flickered in the corner of his eyes, and he heard a voice in his head. "You may live, though you must give up something. Will you do that?" It spoke with an echoing voice. "I have nothing to lose, please, let me live..." His consciousness faded away before he could hear a reply. Later, he woke up again feeling completely revitalized. He wondered where he was, before it hit him. He was alive! How? A Ghosthost Viola hovered near him, looking at him with intense eyes. He realized this creature must have saved him, somehow. "I took away your destructive powers," it spoke, "but I gave you the ability to see the dead." "Why?" he asked, bewildered. "What do I do with that?" "That's up to you, isn't it?" It said with a cackling voice. "It's your second life, it's up to you to do something with it. Now, until the day you die." Harangue pondered its words, looking around. Indeed, he could see the spirits of dragons, beastclans, and other species he had never seen before. Some of them looked angry. Most of them looked sad. Feeling bad, thinking about all those he must have killed in his previous life, he decided. He decided he was going to help these sad spirits, be it through talking, bringing things to them, or other means, but by the deities, he was going to help them. So he travelled the lands once more, this time helping those who were not of this world anymore. In the years that followed, Harangue ended up making his homebase in the Purring Winds. There are... many ghosts hanging around the clan. He doesn't know if that's a good or a bad thing. |
