The trials of life have changed Buru's existence from a place of comfortable servitude to that of a pearl-less outcast. He's learned that trust is not to be given so easily, and precious few have done enough to earn his. Zarim allowed the wounded Pearlcatcher to stay within the clan after coming to them for aid, and Buru took up work for the healer as a sort of repayment. The attacks suffered by the scribe after his ejection from his previous clan left him deeply scarred, the worst of the marks kept hidden by the mantle none but 'Raj have seen him without.

While his mate tends to the records and research of the clan healer, Buru took on the book keeping once merchants began moving into the territory. Working with financial records had been standard for most of his life, so the shift away from scribework was a welcome change. Numbers will always be a source of familiarity for Buru, especially now that fellow dragons often fill him with unease.

Buru was brought into a Plague clan when he was still a hatchling, barely a week old at the time of his purchase. The clan he grew up in considered itself more sophisticated than other settlements around the Wyrmwound, but with the tiers of command came a quiet battle for status among the particularly ambitious members. The noble Buru was made to work for was a rather gentle lord, and Buru's talent for numbers made him an invaluable servant.

Their friendship wasn't a secret, so when a coup ended his lord's rule, Buru was quickly exiled to ensure there would be no chance of retaliation from the record-keeper. He was fortunate his pearl was already with him, given how quickly they ran him out of the territory.

Despite being accustomed to the Wasteland climate, it was still a trial to manage to its edges. Buru had hoped to return to the Starfall Isles, where he could find work with his skills in arithmetics. However, fearing what the outcast would do now that he was out of their eye, the same sect that overthrew his lord sent mercenaries after him as well.

At the edge of the Wasteland, in the midst of the thickets of the Wandering Contagion, he fell to the attackers. Pierced through the chest, wing horribly torn, the mercenaries left him to die, taking his pearl as a trophy and sign of their success.

Buru's magic had never been strong, but now, on the edge of death, it surged, reached out to life around it and pulled it close. Buru was unconscious for the next three days, wrapped in a mess of vines and thorns. When he finally woke, a knot of gray had twisted around his chest, creeping up his wings. The infectious plant life had twined its way into his flesh, knitting wounds closed in a frightening sight.

Terrified and still aching in his bones, Buru turned back to the wastes, hoping the clan he'd passed on his way hadn't yet moved on.
