Cleisthenes hated it.

He hated watching his parents, who, he knew, loved each other so much, battle on opposite sides day after day, and for what?

He knew. He knew that one side fought for freedom and salvation, and the other fought for tyranny and destruction. His father knew what he was fighting for, as did his mother. And every time their eyes met on the battlefield, their eyes filled with pain, and they would turn away to engage someone else. Anything to avoid one another.

Cleisthenes did not want to inherit this land. Whichever side won, he would be taking the side of both his family and his enemy, for they were now one and the same.

Cleisthenes fled.

It was Michael who found him.

With his sword slung across his back, Michael had heard of the return of his human clanmaster and was coming to meet her. Cleisthenes, completely empty-handed, was wandering the Steppes, weakened by starvation, holding on by sheer determination.

'Hungry, boy?' Michael called out.

Cleisthenes looked at him warily, maintaining his distance.

Michael rummaged in his bag and pulled out a clam, which he tossed in Cleisthenes' direction. It landed neatly at his feet.

'I don't have a lot,' Michael said apologetically. 'But there's more where that came from, if you come with me.'

He turned around and walked away with seemingly no expectation that Cleisthenes would follow him. Perhaps that was why, body low to the ground, Cleisthenes slunk after him.

In the lair that Michael lead him to, the resident clan exploded with excitement at their entrance. For some time, Cleisthenes was completely neglected as the clan crowded Michael, bombarding him with greetings, questions, and anecdotes. Nearby, food was laid out on a table, but never in his life had it ever occurred to Cleisthenes to take what was not his without asking. He merely sat against the cave wall, absorbing the heat it exuded. Almost all of the other members of the clan were Coatls, like him.

Eventually, he was noticed. A white-bodied female detached herself from the crowd around Michael, and asked him if he would like to eat. He couldn't answer, but without waiting for him to, she went to table and beckoned him over.

In a way, the members of the clan spoke very little. To a young Coatl escaping his past, it was the perfect refuge.

Cleisthenes realised that the members of the clan were trying to reach out to him. He had slipped quietly into their clan, taken shelter under their roof, and eaten from their plates, while he gave nothing back. At first, he was afraid to even tell them his name. They had generously received him without question, but the silent stranger worried them.

They wanted to be kind. Cleisthenes, however, was too anxious to accept their kindness.

Once he had recovered from his journey, and the fear of being discovered by his family subsided sufficiently that he no longer shied away from stepping outdoors, he sought out Lullaby to offer himself for a job. She nodded, and the next day, he followed her to the market. After a month, he completely took over the task of trading wares for the clan.

In this way, he became a productive member of the clan. But still he kept to himself, busying himself with work and making polite excuses to ever only speak a few words to other members.

He did not belong. He felt so sure of that.

'Hey, Cleisthenes.'

Cleisthenes swallowed the urge to flinch. He nodded at Tichaona and, thinking he only meant to greet him, moved to walk past, but Tichaona stopped him with a flick of his tail. Cleisthenes could not stop his eyes lingering on Tichaona's tail as it withdrew, on the three eyes on either side of the tail, trailing all the way up his neck.

'Are you going to the market tomorrow?' Tichaona asked.

Cleisthenes dragged his gaze to the eyes on Tichaona's head. He felt hyper aware of the fact that every single one of Tichaona's eyes were focusing on him, and it made his fur stand on end.

'Yes.'

'I'll come with you.'

The mere idea was mortifying. Cleisthenes took in a deep breath.

'Thank you very much for the offer, Tichaona -' he began with a bow.

'Great. See you in the morning then.'

Tichaona walked away. Cleisthenes could have fainted on the spot.

In truth, Cleisthenes was nettled that Tichaona was intruding upon him. The other clan members knew well by now that Cleisthenes liked it best when he could be alone. Perhaps it was because Tichaona was still relatively new to the clan. He might give up on speaking to Cleisthenes once he realised how resigned and reticent he was.

It was on this comforting thought that Cleisthenes busied himself with wrapping up his wares the next day. Despite the early hour, Tichaona was not long in appearing.

'Good morning,' he said, coming up around the stack of items. 'Am I late?'

'Good morning.' Cleisthenes inclined his head to him. 'Not at all.'

'Nice spell, this.' Tichaona tugged at the invisible, magical ropes holding the day's goods together. 'Where did you learn magic?'

Maintaining his composure when confronted about his past was beyond him. Cleisthenes mumbled, 'My family,' then turned around, briskly tying the rope in a harness around himself.

'Should I help?'

'No, but thank you.'

Tichaona was talking far too much for his liking, and Cleisthenes felt uncharacteristically vexed. He hoped dearly that it would not be this way the whole day.

'I might have to ask you a favour,' Tichaona said.

Another one? 'What is it?'

'Can you hold onto me while we fly? The air here is dusty, and even dressed like this, it's painful to my eyes, so I close them. I'm not much good at flying alone, see?'

Cleisthenes stared at him. For the first time, he noticed that Tichaona wore a silk cloak draped over his body, when he was usually seen wearing nothing in the lair. His eyes were faintly visible through the cloth, blinking, gazes roving around the cave entrance.

'Can you not close all of your eyes except for the two on your head?' Cleisthenes said.

'I could, but I'm not used to restricting my vision, and it disorients me. I don't know how you manage with only two eyes.'

If Cleisthenes was anyone else, he might have said that he could not imagine how Tichaona managed twenty.

'Yes,' Cleisthenes said. 'Alright.'
