CqDsxZn.png ....................Roxy, the Reborn

..........Roxanne was not your ordinary dragoness from the clan of Acedicy. While most other ladies of varying levels of nobility were busily honing their skills in academic areas such as law, politics, history, poetry and the like, Roxanne was busy honing her skills in arms and combat.

Many within the clan found Roxanne strange- Dragonesses, after all, were not expected (nor allowed) to take part in the matters of war and conquest. Still, their disapproval did little to dissuade Roxy from her interest and determination in taking up swordplay. When asked for a reason for her stubbornness, Roxanne would only curtly remind them to “mind their own business”, though the truth was, the dragoness did have a reason for her unusual interest. It was just unfortunate that she also realised that few, if any, would believe her if she did tell them of this truth.

Roxanne was a time-traveller from the future, where she had met an untimely demise after the warlord of the Undergrove clan descended upon them, reining death from above.

Stranger still, was that Roxanne had been a male skydancer called Roxy before his ultimate death at the hands of the warlord and being shot back in time.

The realisation that he had not only travelled back in time to when he was a hatchling, and that he was apparently a dragoness now was dizzying, to say the least.

Still, Roxy was not one to simply give up in the face of harsh deterrences. Instead, steeling his mind, the skydancer decided to make do with what he had and began training, more vigilantly than ever, in preparation for his clan’s inevitable war with the Undergrove, and of his inevitable confrontation with the Undergrove warlord.

He only hoped that it would be enough to avoid a similar catastrophe which had felled him in his previous lifetime.

Mirror Poem by MythicalViper
I was the strongest warrior of my clan
Dragons trembled at my name
I sowed chaos with my wings outstretched
Enemies saw me as their bane

But curse the gods, in a twist of fate
I was felled by none other than your hand
And worse, when I was finally reborn
I was born as female instead

And you know the females in my family
Were not permitted to go to war
But, well, damn it all I’ll be
I’ll be the first to go so far

I knew everything that will happen
I knew all that I had to do
So I swore that in this life
I’d be the one to bring doom to you

And yet - such humiliation, I have never felt
Once again I fell at your feet
And if that was not shameful enough
You wanted me to nest your hatchlings

You took me from the battlefield
Made me a lady of your house
You wanted me to be your mate
Your loving, caring spouse

Did you think I’d make a good wife?
Did you think that I would obey?
Did you think that I’d sit quietly
And let you have your way?

No, for this is just another war
To be fought on a different field
I’ll make you see my cunning
Before sending you straight to hell

So don’t you dare rest easy
I’ll bring you down to your knees
This battle is not yet over
Don’t you dare take your eyes off me.

Story by DilsDragons

..........The wedding was over. He was married to Fortus, whether he liked it or not, and what he needed now was a plan. What could he do to get out of this? Roxy wracked his brain. Running away was too risky, and too cowardly for his liking. Asassination was a tempting option, but an unnecessarily risky one. He paced the room, thinking. In spite of himself, his thoughts wandered.

He had his own room for now, thank the Arcanist. Still adjusting, they tutted, still getting used to a new life, so he got his own room, and his own bed. For now, he didn’t have to worry about sharing one with Fortus. A wave of nausea drowned him. For now, he didn’t have to worry about what came next. He took a deep breath, and steadied himself. For now, it was time to focus.

What did he know? He had to work tactically. Brute force wasn’t going to work. He had to make a political play to try to free himself from this awful fate, but he had no idea how Undergrove would react to a hypothetical faux pas. He stopped, and pondered. What would a faux pas be to begin with? He had no idea of their law, their history, their culture, or anything of the sort. If he wanted to end this union, he had to know what he was working with. That was where he’d start.

He opened the door. “Shadow?”

“Lady Roxanne.” His voice startled him– Even when he knew he was there, he was never where he expected.

“May I leave this room?”

Shadow tilted his head. “Of course my Lady. You’re free to traverse the grounds as you wish, within reason.”

He blinked, taken aback. “I am?” He cleared his throat. “I mean– Where’s the library?”

“Right this way.”

~

..........‘Given the Lord has chosen a spouse thought to be unsuitable in strength or any such feat, anyone of standing great enough to be of import, such as kin or counsel of the Lord, may challenge the spouse to test their mettle.’

Roxy scoffed. More of the same violence and might he had come to expect from three days of perusing the laws and customs of the Undergrove clan in the royal archives. It was interesting, though.

It seemed the throne was taken purely through succession by conquest. How were they not constantly quelling uprisings from supporters of the previous warlord? It was incredible that the clan hadn’t fallen, and it was downright miraculous that they were so well off with such precarious leadership. At the very least, it was a far cry from the long, droning speech and discussion he was used to back home. It was probably more fun to watch, too. But it wasn’t fun to read about. He needed a break from the monotony.

He peeked out of the archives. “Shadow?”

“Yes, my lady?”

“Would it be at all possible for us to go somewhere…else?”

“Somewhere else?” Shadow cocked his head.

“Somewhere off the royal grounds.” He thought for a moment. “A city, maybe. I’d really like to see what life’s like out there. See if it meets my expectations.”

For a long moment, Shadow didn’t speak. He squinted, and held a claw to his chin, clearly considering something.

“If it’s too much trouble–”

“No,” he finally declared. “It shouldn’t be. I’ll make the arrangements.”

“You will? Just like that?” In spite of himself, some incredulity seeped in.

“I’ll need to assemble an entourage,” he clarified. “There should be enough guards available since the battle has died down. I’ll gather some, and some handmaidens, and we’ll be on our way.”

So he would finally see the streets paved in blood he had heard so much about. The walls lined with skulls. He gulped in anticipation.

~

..........The streets were paved with cobblestone, the walls lined with bricks. Roxy’s eyes scanned the city for any spoils of war to satisfy his morbid curiosity, but all he found was a place not unlike where he’d grown up. It was odd how similar it was to his own home. Except for the banners flown high above the buildings, it was nigh identical.

As he and his entourage made their way throughout the city, he watched as dragons whispered among themselves, in awe at the sight of their leader’s new wife. Families with curious hatchlings, staring at the procession with wide eyed wonder. Customers of the various establishments, all murmuring and looking at him with the mild judgement of any citizen sizing up a new individual of political import.

"Good day, Lady Roxanne," said a merchant with a deep bow.

It was all so… normal.

“It’s so strange…” he muttered.

“Is it?” Shadow startled him. He hadn’t realised he’d said that out loud.

“I’d expected a more militant culture, I suppose.”

He furrowed his brow. “Militant?”

Roxy shrugged. “I don’t know. Demonstration and drills and the like. Sparring in the streets. Spoils of war everywhere. So much of the culture and economy revolves around conquest, I thought it’d be more… conquest-y.”

Shadow pondered, for a moment. “Well, military service is mandatory once a dragon comes of age, but that’s not unique to us. A lot of clans do something similar, or even the exact same thing.”

“But this is Undergrove. This is the clan of conquerors, the consumers of the world, the spillers of blood. This is a place of violence, why does it look so peaceful?”

He thought, for a moment. “Maybe we just value strength and power. We tell our young the history of the old warlords of the past, of our victory and greatness. Perhaps our young ones simply grow up wanting to be great fighters because of it.”

“So what about those that can’t fight? The weak ones?”

Shadow laughed, gently. “No one is weak, Lady Roxanne. Strength blooms in many different shades, and there are many different battlefields to fight on.” Just then, something caught his eye.

"We should keep moving. There's a lot to see." He started ushering him forward.

"What are you looking at?" Roxy turned, to see a red and gold imperial approaching. She seemed familiar… she was at the wedding, wasn't she?

“I think we should leave.” Shadow stated. “Now.”

He dawdled. “I don’t know… It seems like she wants to talk to me.”

“Lady Roxanne, I can’t recommend–”

“Can’t recommend what?” Asked the imperial. She dragged her eyes lazily over the two, as if she was sizing them up.

"Hello Roze." Shadow was curt with his greeting. He stood with a claw ghosting towards Roxy, as though he was prepared to grab him and run. “We were just leaving.”

"It's nice to see you again, Shadow. And Lady Roxanne," she turned to him, her smile sickly sweet. "How have you been since the wedding?”

He shifted his weight uncomfortably. "Fine. Still settling."

"Still settling." She nodded. "Still… settling. Hmm." She cocked her head. "And tell me, you think you have a place here?"

"I– Sorry?" Had he heard her right?

"Roze–"

"Oh Shadow, come on. I just want to know if she thinks she's actually welcome."

“Can’t you do that somewhere else?” He looked around at the crowd starting to form around the altercation. “Somewhere private?”

“And why should I do that? If this runt is my brother’s new wife, I have a right to see if she’s worthy of that title.” She glared at Roxy. “And I don’t think she is.”

Suddenly, he realised he’d read about this. ‘Given the Lord has chosen a spouse thought to be unsuitable in strength or any such feat, anyone of standing great enough to be of import, such as kin or counsel of the Lord, may challenge the spouse to test their mettle.’ It was one of the strange customs of Undergrove. Roze was issuing a challenge to test his strength.

“That’s enough, Roze,” Shadow snapped. “Lady Roxanne, I strongly recommend we leave.” He reached out a claw.

This might have been his chance.

“Hold on,” Roxy started. “I… I accept your challenge.”

Shadow gave him a pleading look. “Lady Roxanne, you really don’t need to put yourself in danger like this.”

“No, I do.” He turned to Roze. “To prove I’m worthy of–” He grimaced, slightly. “Of my love.” This could have been his ticket out. If he could fail miserably enough to embarrass Fortus, he might be free of this union. He didn’t want to put too much hope in this scheme succeeding, but the glimmer that was there was enough to get his heart racing.

Roze smiled. “Oh, I’m certain you’ll prove something, Roxanne.”

Story by GrinningFox

..........Blue laced his claws together and stretched his arms as he walked. He looked forward to relaxing after a long day. As he made his way down the hallway toward the communal bath, he spotted the imposing figure of Fortus. Immediately, Blue rearranged his face to show neither disappointment nor delight, even as he himself wasn’t sure what to feel.

“Going to the baths, Blue?” Fortus asked.

“I am.” He strolled past Fortus and to the entrance to the men’s bath.

“Wait,” Fortus said, reaching for Blue’s arm.

“What are you doing?”

“What am I doing? What are you doing?”

“I just told you, Fortus. Frankly, I thought it was obvious. I am going to the baths.” Blue pulled his arm out of Fortus’ grip. “You don’t need to worry about me, I’m not going to drown.”

“No, you are perfectly capable of surviving a trip to the bath, I’m sure. It’s just not a good idea to go to this bath, is all I’m saying.”

“What?” Blue glanced around, his expression breaking into surprise. “Is there something wrong with this bath? What is it? Not an infestation, I hope. Do we need to tell someone?”

"Wait, hold on. Just slow down for a minute, that's not it." Fortus fidgeted, trying to find the right words. "No, there's nothing wrong with the bath. The problem is, specifically, you going in this bath."

Blue squinted back at him. "If it's not about the bath, are you insulting me? If you're going to insult someone you could at least have the decency to say it directly."

Fortus chewed his lip and decided he was right about being direct, though the insult was not intentional. "Blue, that is the men's bath house and you do not currently look like a man."

Blue instinctively looked down, taking in his own appearance since the transformation that brought him back from the brink of death, then looked back up at Fortus with wide eyes. "I can't go into the ladies' bath house. I can't."

Fortus looked at him and wanted desperately to help wash away that expression of shock and fear. "It's okay, if you don't want to stay at the bath house, we'll find something else."

Blue relaxed a little at that, giving an almost imperceptible nod. “Okay,” he said softly.

Emboldened by Blue’s agreement, Fortus took the lead, bringing the pair away from the bath house and out into an open field with plenty of space to take off. Fortus felt the freedom of wind filling his wings and heard Blue’s steady wingbeats not far behind. They flew over a lush forest, rich with life and color, before finally coming to land in a clearing along a wide river. As he landed, a handful of smaller creatures that had stopped at the river to drink decided to scurry away through the safe embrace of underbrush rather than risk a run in with two dragons.

Blue looked around, uncertain and somewhat wary. His instincts from years as a skilled fighter kicked in. He scanned the unfamiliar terrain for threats, but was shocked back to the here-and-now by water to the face.

Fortus laughed so hard he felt tears come to his eyes. “You should have-you should have seen the look on your face. It was amazing-”

Fortus didn’t get a chance to finish, as he was cut off by Blue marching directly into the river to return the favor. Soon enough both of them were up to their wings in the river and mercilessly splashing water at each other while laughter filled the air.
