She hugged the coastline but found many of the locations distasteful. Too dry, too charged with magic, too windy, too hot, even though many of these places touched the lapping waves of Tidecaller's domain it wasn't good enough. She settled on the shores of the Driftwood Drag, within Shadow's territory, and ate an evening meal. She settled down to rest when another skydancer approached. She was bright purple and glowing faintly in the semi-darkness of the early evening. Sjelkart felt a power rise from her, and every feather on her body raised up in alarm. The mind-touch was soft and polite, but it was powerful like a coiled spring. Ophelia was this dragon's name, and she was an ambassador of Shadow in a clan across the waves. Hope filled her heart with its own siren's call. In Nature Flight's territory, on the edge of the Shrieking wilds, lay a clan of warriors. They were a mix of Flights and of breeds, living together under the same cause - Eat or be Eaten - Survival - Strength of body, mind, and soul. But they were missing something. While there were Water Flight dragons living there, they had no sea-captains. What Ophelia offered was distasteful - being a simple supply hauling barge-captain between the Battleborn clan in the Wilds and Ophelia's "Family" along the shores of the Driftwood. But... she'd finally be the captain of her dreams. It wasn't perfect, but it was a start. Her own bloodline kith and kin might not recognize her need to captain her own ship, per their traditions. But here, there were no others of her bloodline to tell her "right" from "wrong". The temptation was powerful. She agreed and joined the Battleborn Clan. However, life is not always kind. Nor do we see the twists and turns that walk one through the brambles of life's journey. It wasn't until she arrived in the heart of the Clan's territory that she realized how wrong she was about no others of the Dirge living here. She met, of all dragons, her Aunt Isla. After a brief spat, Isla agreed to sail with Sjelkart. Without a male to captain a ship for them, they were land-bound. This was too much for the children of the Dirge. Their souls belonged out on the waves. In some small ways, as annoying as her aunt can be, there was comfort in having family there. It made the journeys less lonely, and there was always someone nearby who understood the draw of the sea and the call of the siren's song that lay within their hearts. After all, together they would conquer the waterways around their small part of the world. That was the blessing. |

_____________________ Many months she sailed the open water between her Clan's home and the outlying reaches of other Flights' ports. Many dragons, families, clans, and tribes were met. Many trades were made. Baylie, the Battleborn Clan's chief trade-dragon, often sailed with the child of the Dirge, sharing tales of areas further inland during their longer voyages. Sjelkart's was full, but her soul still craved more. Some of their travels, they took the clan's premiere hunters and warriors to far reaches that couldn't easily be reached by flight or land. Their stories stirred her warrior's blood. Even Ilsa's feathers stood up in excitement when the hunters spoke of the beasts they faced. One starry night, she stood at the prow and looked over the docks. The ship creaked as the slight current pushed against it's sides. Life as captain to the trade barge began to wear on her. Ilsa approached and suggested she train her siren skills, but even indulging that reminded her that a siren's path was not her own. She ached for battles. During dry dock repairs a few months later, her late-night dreaming wishes were granted. The Captain of the Guard insisted she and her Aunt train. Deep in her heart joy bloomed. Her mother would have insisted on training her as a siren, but here she could be a warrior, a Valkyrie. Ilsa balked until she learned of the battlemages the clan boasted. There was always more than one way to fight, Drakenvulf said to them. So began their training. |
_____________________________ About a year later, Sjelkart honed her claws and her magic against the creatures of the deep. She found her affinity to the water lent her a special skill in battling the enemies under the waves. She was introduced to the Clan's elite fighters and honored by taking the Gladekeeper's Chosen to sea for training. While she knew of the Clan's ways and values, this new aspect both intrigued her and frightened her. Many times the dragons she took with her were not of Nature Flight. Some were unaware of their plight, but all were given a choice. Serve the Gladekeeper as Her warriors or leave. The almost fanatical devotion to empowering the Gladekeeper reminded her of the loyalty and virtues of her own family. Supporting the Gladekeeper this way seemed almost sacrilegious and wrong. Her affinity to the Tidecaller was strong, the bond of the Ocean, of Water's domain, was deep within her soul. Her devotion to her family was more powerful than that, and some part of her was homesick for those familiar faces. Even so, her craving to captain her own ship kept her in Nature's Domains and serving the Gladekeeper's standing army. It left her with a lot to think about. | __ |

_____________________ She met Night Warriors during this time, and a handsome Imperial named Tiderunner joined their crew. His request concerned Sjelkart, but his watery soul called to her and Ilsa. He may not be of the Dirge, but he was of the sea - that much was obvious by his skills and ease of sailing. But the small boat would not hold his bulk or size. He, not Sjelkart, approached the Clan's Matriarch and Patriarch to obtain a larger ship. With the increased trade and eas of travel they offered, it was granted. Isla purred with delight, but Ilsa refused to sail under a dragon, not of Ragnar and Lorelei's bloodline. She faced the larger male, ready to battle, but instead of fighting he dipped his head and offered it to her - for a small price. He wanted to learn the ways of the Dirge. |
