━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

"Again and again and--
There are monsters to slay,
And lives to save.
Wake up."

We are:

The monsters we slay-- something bright and harsh and burning tears through the soft flesh of his throat; the enchantment that rips itself from his lungs and squeezes the last drop of his life dry washes over the heads of his allies and cleaves right through the chest of a roaring, murderous Shade-possessed emperor. Felled at last, it collapses in a thunderous crash, sending black blood sluicing across the ruined battlefield. He knew casting the spell would drain the last of his magic and his life force with it, but even as the spark in the emperor's ink-black eyes and his dull grey ones begins to fade and he sinks to his knees, he knows that his sacrifice to be well worth the cost. Briefly, he hopes the funeral won't be too much of a sad one.

The price we pay-- he surrenders to the tempest, offering himself up to the heavens above and the darkness beyond it. To save the village and all of its inhabitants, he is more than willing to give up everything that he is and will be. His wings ache from the exertion, and still, he climbs, reaching out for heart of the spell that brought the accursed storm to life. Lightning replaces the ice that flows through his veins, and all he has the breath for is one last scream as wind and rain and bolts of forked thunder seep into his scales and the sun breaks through the last wreckage of the clouds. His body falls and falls, landing in a ditch miles away and left for the scavenging birds to pick clean.

The love we leave behind-- cursed forever and evermore to give his life up for the innocent and the helpless, he does it willingly every time. If death is the worst fate of all, this comes a close second. No longer does he hesitate; he knows what lies on the other side of the veil.

And there is nothing left to fear.

[ notes ]
» There is no greater cause, no nobler death.
» The process hurts. The scars don't ever leave.
» There is no running from this.
