It's difficult to tell where the statuette came from. Who first made it, and why. It stands only a few inches tall, the perfect likeness of a crowned Spiral, carved from stone so polished that it now gleams like steel. The dragon who first picked it up was searching for comfort. He had traveled long to visit his brother's clan. He arrived only to find the seaside lair devastated by a tsunami, the inhabitants scattered, their possessions smashed to bits. The totem was one of the few things to escape the destruction intact. Taking this as a sign of good fortune, he pocketed it and then went on his way. The totem arrived home with him, and was set on a shelf with many other figurines. The dragon who'd picked it up thought of his lost brother whenever he looked at it. "Perhaps I am more fortunate," he thought, "since I live far from the sea. My treehouse is far from any water..." There the totem stayed, until one dark night, when the forest was struck by fierce winds that beat down upon it like hammers. Branches splintered, and eventually snapped. Dens were ripped open by the merciless storm. The tree-dwelling dragon was found the next morning, amidst the wreckage of his home. Most of his belongings had been scattered by the winds. But a few remained near his prone body. Beside him, the dark totem gleamed. It was picked up by an enterprising clanmate, who added it to her inventory of things to sell. She took it with her when she and her caravan began the journey to the Tangled Wood. The totem was meant to have been sold at Murkbarrow Close. Instead, it was found abandoned in the forest weeks later, among scattered sundry goods that looked as though they'd been discarded in a hurry. Most of the goods had been ruined by the damp weather, but the totem still shone, unblemished by rust or moss. Its eyes gleamed, and it seemed to look quizzically at the dragon who now picked it up. "Where to now?" it seemed to ask. It waited, as patient as it had ever been, to see what would happen next.
