Adastra Research Outpost
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Adastra Research Outpost (abbreviated as ARO; also referred to colloquially as Clan Adastra) is a scientific research-focused community currently located in the southeastern section of the Rotrock Rim in the Scarred Wasteland. Its population fluctuates due to the large number of visiting scholars, scientists, and other temporary guests, but there is a core permanent staff of around 100.[1]

ARO is probably most well-known for its members' work in the fields of botany and biomagic; indeed, most of their funding derives from the sale of rare plants and scrolls of change. The community is also renowned for having one of the largest and most diverse collections of plants and fungi in Sornieth, although access to all but the smallest portion of it is prohibited to all but the primary staff and sanctioned researchers.[2] [3]

History [ edit ]

Origins [ edit ]

The Adastra Research Outpost was founded in 4168 in the most southeastern part of the Scarred Wasteland, just a few miles from the Sea of a Thousand Currents. The original intent behind its establishment was to create a research space with a minimum of regulations; the key founder, Azmidiske, frequently came into conflict with the ethics committee of Astrella University, where she both grew up and later attended. Similarly dissatisfied students and several staff members (including co-founders Hadar and Alhena) joined her cause, and the group split off from Astrella University to form their own institution.

Insufficient preparation (primarily a lack of professional construction workers and materials, but also the underestimation of the harshness of the terrain) lead to several deaths among the group. At this point, a number of less invested members left - either to return to Astrella University, or to search for a more organised institution.

However, help came in the form of neighbouring clans - notably Mhairow and Skepyla - who welcomed the addition of a centre of education to the region, and by early 4169 the Outpost was running smoothly.

In June 4173, however, several researchers were discovered to have been running morally repugnant experiments, and subsequently dealt with according to Wasteland Law. Some have named this an “obvious outcome” of the Outpost’s lack of regulation, and of how its core members were united solely by the goal of circumventing typical experimental regulation. Azmidiske has since expressed her “deepest regrets” at what happened, claimed that the perpetrators had “violated [her] trust” and vowed never to let such a thing happen again. Official regulations remain notably lax, but indeed no further incidents have come to light. It is possible that the fates of the original perpetrators have discouraged any hoping to copy them.

Most research from this period was personal projects and studies of the biology and geography of the area, in particular the species gradients between Plague, Water, and Shadow territory.

Emperor incident [ edit ]

xxxMain article: Scarred Wasteland Emperor Incident of 4179

  • in 4179, a roaming featherback boar claimed the lives of two imperials (one from a neighbouring community) and injured another; despite what must be assumed were the best efforts of their compatriots, an Emperor was formed from the bodies, and the party was decimated and thereby unable to send warning
  • many more were killed when the Emperor reached ARO, as the vast majority of buildings were surface-level and easily collapsed by a tier 2 Emperor; among the casualties were two more imperials who, unusually, did not join the original to become a tier 4, but instead formed their own tier 1. even more unusually, this second Emperor forewent attacking the community in favour of attacking the first Emperor.
  • (this incident is commonly cited by the Rehabilitation movement as evidence that Emperors are still aware and could possibly be rehabilitated, but this has never been proven and remains a very contentious issue.)
  • while the body of the original Emperor was recovered and safely disposed of, the second was never found - though it is likely that it too was disposed of, since it has never resurfaced.

Relocation [ edit ]
  • the Outpost having been destroyed so, many survivors took shelter with neighbouring clans or otherwise split off on their own, but most instead moved north to the Rotrock Rim where they established the second iteration of the Adastra Research Outpost - officially as to be closer to the Plaguebringer should such an incident ever reoccur, but the true reasoning is allegedly more personal.
  • it seems they learned a great deal in from the Emperor incident, as their new setup is almost 85% underground, occupying an old partially-natural, partially-dug series of caves.
  • it is here that they have remained for the last 15 years, and where they have established their true proficiency: botany.
  • The Garden was built in 4180 as a place to keep foreign specimens that could not planted on the surface due to the aggressive pathogens and pests, and the collection has grown vastly in the time since. Some of the most impressive specimens include a number of critically endangered crimson jadevines, and a stand of the declining aether cherry.

Current events [ edit ]
  • since December 4193, several people - staff and visitors alike - have gone missing, and increased activity down to the Vault level have been noted. ARO administration has yet to comment.

Controversy [ edit ]
Ethics [ edit ]

Despite being a member of the Interflight Science Alliance, whose entry requirements include commitments to ethics, the facility operates solely under Wasteland Law, which remains highly contentious. While many are strongly opposed to the looseness of Wasteland Law, no adequate solutions have been proposed; the region's low population density, lack of permanent settlements, and overall environmental harshness make laws difficult to follow, let alone enforce. As such, these particular prerequisites are generally waived for institutions based in the Scarred Wasteland and the Southern Icefield, who face similar problems.
