► HISTORY
Khonsu's father, Ophion, was a greater elemental of moonlight: a tremendous being who wielded the magic of the moon, and who fed upon the power and life-force of dragons. He was also a shapeshifter and frequently disguised himself as a mortal to charm members of dragonkind and get close to his prey. However, the long years of learning about dragons led to Ophion understanding them more deeply -- and loving and respecting them. He swore off his predatory lifestyle, instead electing to protect the beings he'd preyed upon for centuries.
The dragons called Ophion the Lunar Serpent, and many of them sought his protection. They soon formed the Clan of the Lunar Serpent, a paradise that bloomed even in the harshness and heat of the Ashfall Waste. Ophion took a wife, Thetis the Pearlcatcher, from among them. Khonsu was born from this union, and he inherited much of his father's power. He was also taught how to beguile others and charm them into falling in love with him, as his father had once beguiled his prey.
After Ophion's death, Khonsu ruled the clan long and wisely. He did not see much use for the skills his father had taught him -- until a mysterious dragoness came to his territory and began fomenting conflict among his vassals. He soon learned that this stranger was Leannan, a malevolent fairy who fed on others' emotions -- her favorites being jealousy and strife. To protect his vassals, Khonsu lured Leannan to his palace, declaring that she was an honored guest. Over the next several weeks, he charmed her into falling in love with him. All the while he was crafting a spell against her, planning to entrap her beneath a nearby hill.
The plan was sucessful, but not entirely so. Although Leannan was sealed away, she managed to fight back, gravely injuring Khonsu in the process. As a result, the binding was not as strong as it might have been. Khonsu knew that she would eventually break free to wreak havoc again. Thus he abdicated his throne and shed his physical body -- in doing so, he would be able to live longer, and hopefully that would increase the efficacy of the spell as well.
Despite his resolution, Khonsu was unable to recapture Leannan when she at last broke free. He also realized his power was waning: In his elemental form, he would have to feed on dragons, something he'd never done before. The need to recapture Leannan spurred him on, however, and he attempted to forge agreements with various sorcerers: He was always honest about his intentions to partake of their magic and use it to complete his own quest. None of them agreed to this, however...until a young witch, Netanya, reached out to him.
Netanya and her clanmates were struggling against another evil spirit: the Shade fragment known as Ouroboros. She didn't shy away from Khonsu's conditions; in fact, her own mission had given her some sympathy towards him. The two of them forged a pact, pledging their lives to the success of each other's quests.
Khonsu proved to be invaluable to the Oneironauts. His magic was effective against Ouroboros' onslaughts, and he could also use it to ease the damage she'd wrought. He soon earned his clanmates' respect -- and Netanya's growing affection, which he reciprocated. Leannan remained at large, however, and one night, she stole into the lair and attacked Netanya, believing that it would impair Khonsu as well. While this proved to not be the case, she found herself overridden with guilt and returned to reverse the curse's effects. Khonsu, realizing there was no longer any reason to hunt Leannan, decided to pledge himself wholly to the clan -- and to Netanya as her mate.
Ouroboros (and the Shade) continue to threaten the Disillusionists' dreams, and so Khonsu continues to wield his magic against her. His life is not a constant battle, however, and he and Netanya have also had several children -- including Qutaibah, who has unusual abilities of her own.
► CHARACTER Khonsu was groomed from his earliest days to be a leader and protector of his clan. He grew up with a strong sense of duty and protectiveness towards his vassals -- a tendency that continues today with the Disillusionists. As ruler of his birth clan, he was calm and diplomatic, preferring collaboration over conflict. He liked to make himself accessible to others, and he encouraged both his vassals and visitors to reach out to him when needed. Despite his rather opulent beginnings, much of Khonsu's life has been difficult. The Clan of the Lunar Serpent was already quite large when he assumed leadership of it, and even before Leannan's arrival, keeping his clan running smoothly was no easy task. His half-elemental heritage has given him a great deal of physical and mental fortitude: Sole leadership of the clan might have broken ordinary mortals, but Khonsu was able to draw on his vast knowledge and energies to run his clan for centuries. He was not a dragon who was willing to accept half-measures or defeat even then, and when he eventually stepped down, he left a strong, unified clan to his chosen successors. Although it has been many centuries since Khonsu acted as a leader, he retains his calm, dignified air. Dragons instinctively understand that he doesn't panic easily, and he in fact seems incapable of losing his temper. He happily defers to his clanmates, particularly his fellow Oneironauts, but can be relied upon to take charge when necessary. He can quickly assess situations and will readily offer what help he can. He is known to be reticent, and clanmates have learned that whenever he speaks, it's usually worth listening to. Since much of his existence has been devoted to upholding various duties, it's perhaps no surprise that he's very reserved in public, and can have trouble communicating with his loved ones. He is adept at charming other dragons, but understandably hesitates to use these skills on people he genuinely cares about. The realization that Leannan (the escape of whom he regarded as his greatest failure) is no longer a threat to him and his loved ones came as a great relief to him, and despite the continued threat that Ouroboros poses, he is now able to face life with more equanimity. Although Khonsu can manifest in physical form, it is very draining on him, and he hasn't done so in years. He prefers to remain in his ethereal form, which resembles a smoky Pearlcatcher, his face and pearl scarred by burns from his long-ago conflict with Leannan. When he is not on duty, he prefers to stay close to Netanya, either inside his spirit vessel or hovering somewhere in their family's quarters. In dream-hunts, he is known to be as resolute in his pursuit of Ouroboros as he was in his persecution of Leannan, and many dragons have glimpsed him blazing through their nightmares, leaving swirls of amber and silver light behind. |
► RELATIONSHIPS
► STATS & ABILITIES
Khonsu will never be a brawler, but he is agile, cunning, and stronger than he appears. He works well in a team or alone. When fighting alongside other dragons, he prefers to take a supporting role, but when he is alone, he isn't above setting traps or employing deceit to subdue his foes. _______________________________________ |
His half-elemental heritage has given him a great deal of strength, and he is immune to most physical debilitations, able to focus on and perform even the most strenuous tasks for long periods of time. His strength, however, waxes and wanes with the moon, and he can be gravely injured under certain conditions. _______________________________________ |
Both of Khonsu's parents were powerful magic-users. He inherited much of their skills and was further trained by his father's vassals. Although he cannot shapeshift, he can use moonlight (and, to a lesser degree, sunlight) to heal or hurt. He can also draw on Netanya's Fire magic to augment his abilities. _______________________________________ |
Khonsu received an education befitting the heir of a prosperous clan. Although much of his knowledge is outdated, he is observant and receptive to changes in the world, particularly where magic is concerned. He recognizes that there are great gaps in his knowledge and will readily defer to other clanmates' areas of expertise. _______________________________________ |
Part of Khonsu's education involved diplomacy, as well as learning how to allure dragons -- an ability he once used to great effect on Leannan. Despite this, he is uncomfortably reminded of how his father and Leannan used this to prey on other beings, and he can sometimes become flustered before his clanmates. _______________________________________ |
Much of Khonsu's life has been tough. He has learned to bear his burdens alone and will not rest until his problems have been resolved. He is grateful for his clanmates' presence, however, and is learning to accept assistance from them. _______________________________________ |
