INTRODUCTION
The hivemind's origins are blurry. It always existed; it never existed; there is no start or end to its tale. One thing is known, however: it is a haunting threat to dragonkind and Sorneith itself, aiming to swallow the entirety of the world.

On its surface, the hivemind consists of black, insectoid creatures, which are often said to resemble dragons in their shape and stature. They have pitch-black carapaces and joints that move with a distinctly robotic feel. They are not alive in the contemporary sense - instead, most individuals are drones, under the control of a rogue consciousness that treats them less like living beings and more like extensions of its own body. A consciousness is a brain, its drones are the organs, and their hive is the chassis.

The presence of a consciousness is critical in supporting a hive. Drones are hollow-minded beings without autonomy or individuality, and most are not programmed with any sort of survival failsafe to remind them to eat and drink if the consciousness commanding it is disconnected. Consciousnesses are sentient in the most alien of senses - they use logic and reason, but lack any sort of empathy or moral compass and prize efficiency above all else. They can even communicate with other consciousnesses along a psychic signal (much like a radio signal) referred to as the baseline wavelength.

Much like an ant colony or a living body, sects of drones are divided into different castes and given different tasks, forming groups not unlike organ systems. Some drones are scavengers, others are guards, and yet others produce drones or food.

Drones can create more of themselves naturally by laying eggs, but this process takes time. To bolster their numbers in the meantime, a hive will capture dragons and force them through a process called assimilation, wherein the victim is gradually transformed, mind and body, into a new drone. The process of assimilation varies from hive to hive, but most commonly involves a drone vomiting assimilation fluid - a substance found in a gland in the back of a drone's throat - into the victim's mouth, after which assimilation begins.

Hives are a scourge upon the land that they live. They steal dragons away from their homes to be assimilated or eaten, leech nutrients from the soil, and attack all those who would dare stand up against them. A hive will not stop its expansion until the consciousness is killed. If left unchallenged, the hivemind (the collective existence of all hives) will rise up to swallow the whole of Sorneith.

Do not let it win. Do not give in. Do not assimilate.

F A C T S
NOCTURNES can mimic sounds with an ease that no other drone type can match. Their small stature makes them great spies and scouts, and their vocal chords are great for mimicking dragon language if a hive wishes to communicate in more conventional manners.
DIVINE DRONE

Any / Basic
Bizarre, god-created drones (as first discovered by V0iCEB0X). As the hivemind grew larger, even the gods learned of it, and many reacted accordingly. Divine drones are infiltrators, often with the singular purpose of rooting out hives and destroying them. A few, however, are seemingly independent, and may work for the hive rather than against it.
SWIRL
Swirling eyes are often found hand-in-hand with hypnodrones, a rare variety of the common drone with bright, hypnotizing patterns painted across their wings. Whereas the typical hypnodrone simply uses their wings, those with Swirl may also use their eyes, and typically to great effect. Some claim that their eyesight is poorer as a result.

Thanks to their ability to construct solid structures with nothing but a single drone, hives can settle just about anywhere. Their most preferred locations are places that are dark and out of the way, with the most common hive blueprint being an ant hive, deep underground and filled with labyrinthine passages. Others may form hives similar to wasps and bees.

In all cases, the consciousness is kept within the deepest, safest levels of the hive, behind as many winding tunnels and guards as humanely possible. Close consorts to the consciousness, such as memory banks, may be kept nearby, perhaps even in the same chamber.

Egg-laying drones are on the level above that. The chambers there are filled with swaths of incubating eggs and pools of assimilation fluid, and some may even have assimilating dragons stuck to the walls and floors. More experimental hives implement other means of assimilation here, such as dragon-sized cocoons filled with assimilation fluid that are sealed off once a dragon has been placed inside.

Above this are sleeping chambers for the drones, which look like empty rooms with dozens of holes punched into their sides. A few drones may be dozing in these nooks, ready to snap awake at the drop of a pin.

Finally, the chambers closest to the entrance are for food production and storage. Drones can eat anything, but their favored meal consists of a syrupy paste created by mixing assimilation fluid with ground-up bits of edible things like meat and vegetables. This food is stored in vat-like containers that are sealed off once filled, waiting to be opened in case of a food shortage. Drones who behave like honeypot ants may be here if no vats exist. At least one food chamber is kept close to the consciousness in case the upper levels of the hive are destroyed.

The outside of the hive is always kept hidden from plain view and disguised with whatever resources the drones can find. One or several guard drones are posted at each entrance.
