"Children of the alchemist and the assassin will often find that their parents are too distant to be anything more than solemn mentors. One parent, an alchemist absorbed in her work, and another, an assassin merely finding xeir legacy, will never be the role models their hatchlings want them to be.

Not that their parents don’t try to be as loving and as doting as possible, it’s just that, well, when there is a guild of assassins that operate in the shadowy corners of Sorineth out for the blood of both their parents, staying safe does seem be at the top of the list of priorities here.

It is an unkind existence. Unfortunately, it is also a necessary one.

Hael, second of the nest and the more reserved of her siblings, finds that she doesn't quite enjoy alchemy as much as her mother does. Becoming an assassin like her other parent has always been out of the question for her, so, logically, if she wants to discover her true passion, she must go elsewhere.

Eventually, she finds her love in the most unexpected of places: a bakery in a dusty corner of Sorineth. There is so much to learn, at first. It goes beyond lists of ingredients, beyond kneading techniques, beyond finding the right oven.

It takes heart and patience, something Hael never truly realised she needed while she scoured every deity's domain for a calling she could never quite settle for.

This wasn't so far off from the alchemy her mother practised. In a way, she still knows her roots. In a way, she honours them still."
