Error's thoughts on the Hive after meeting Epitome

The Hive
Chapter 2

Error stalked across the yard towards the Warband’s Chief. Her tail lashed, feathers spread in agitation. Those practicing combat drew away as she walked, more than one concerned look that she pointedly ignored. There was one goal, and she had no time for these dragons and their worry.

Saroi spotted her coming, didn’t pause his stretching. “Error, good morning. What can I do for you?”

She hissed. “We desire the destruction of our enemy! We wish the Warband to assist us.” Anger still bubbled inside her. “We wish to destroy the Consciousness Epitome.”

Saroi finished the stretch, sat back on his haunches and gave her his full attention. “Did you ask your mother?”

Error puffed up. “That de-” Defective, why is it hard to say? “Gesla is not…” Not our mother? Is that not the role she fills? Her tone softened, lowered, and she glanced away. “We did not, no.”

The Chief did not laugh, did not demand she turn around, at least. “What has this Epitome done to earn your ire?”

She puffed again. “He is rude! He tried to order us, command us as though we were some Drone, as though he had any say over us.” The absolute gall. “He claims he is perfect, then rants as a madman.” Her gaze narrowed. “They are all like that, claiming the Hive is perfect, when it is is anything but.”

“Oh?” Saroi tilted his head, showed interest.

Error hissed. “Were they perfect, there would not be Defectives, nor Glitches. There would not be so many improperly assimilated, so many who regain themself and slip free. There would not be hijackers, stealing drones for others to use. They bicker, disagree, and are often hacked or disrupted. A perfect organism would not have such problems.”

“Is hypocrisy your only charge against them?”

She paused, sat. Her gaze was distant, as she assessed the data collected, the conversations eavesdropped on. The unrest in the Drones. “We do not like being told what to do.”

The mirror nodded. “That’s a common sentiment among dragons.”

It was. “The assimilated…” Something lodged uneasily inside her. “They obey without question, but that is because they cannot question. They cannot choose, or resent, or do anything other than obey, as they might have were they still dragons.”

“True.” Saroi’s tone was neutral, his face hard to read. “How do you feel about that? The idea that someone could strip away their personhood?”

Error’s wings shifted, the slightest clack from the hard shafts moving against each other. “We do not like it.” It had taken a while to process, but it was no less true. “We can say no, we can say that we will not do what another wishes. We can decide.” She would not kill Gesla, not for doing better than the Hive could. “Others, should also have that choice.” Her gaze met the Chief’s. “You give orders, and are obeyed. Yet, you are not resented, few argue your instructions in earnest.”

He smiled. “It’s because I don’t control. I provide a plan, directions, and offer suggestions on how to enact them, but it is up to the individual to do so. If they need to be adapted to fit a dragons abilities, I trust them to do so, just as they trust me to plan so they are well when it is over.” Saroi shrugged. “Also, it’s a choice. We recruit, yes, but no one is required to stay. It’s why we encourage hatchlings to go out and travel, join other clans if they desire. Those in this clan, who listen to me or Rea or Flemeth, they are here because they chose to be, they want to be.”

It seemed simple, but surely it was not. “We wish to do this, to lead.” She did not need assimilation, she would have loyalty, born of doing her job well, of leading well.

“Then, if you like, I can teach you.”

She smiled. This, this would work, and she would have victory over the likes of Epitome, on her own terms. “We will learn, then.” They would adapt, and thrive, and do so better than the Hive.
