Smiley, better known as Milo, was only an egg when Ramu found him. The way she tells it, he was left conspicuously vulnerable in the middle of the overgrown forest path. He later hatched on the floor of the Tipsy Whisker as Ramu downed shots of raw blueberries. Realizing that Ramu was unfit for parenthood—who takes a dragon egg to a bar??—Sumi, the tavern's owner, and her husband took the hatchling in. Milo's temperament appears to echo his father's. Like Rogue, Milo shies away from crowds. He prefers to spend his time wandering the lamplit paths alone. There he searches for feathers, colorful stones, and of course, his favorite medium: clay. Sculpting is Milo's stress-reliever, his obsession, his life's work. He spends his days off flitting through local craft markets, awed by every piece he touches. In truth, Milo's energy is far more like his mother's. His head is full of shapes and colors. His heartbeat trembles in his ears. Someday, Milo tells himself, he will shape something so seamless, so intricate, that it'll cross the boundary between art and life. It's a desire lodged deep in his chest. More than a want. A need. Milo works 'til he has to be torn from his studio, his fingers rubbed raw and twitching. His sleep is fitful. His entire being aches for this unwon dream ... In the meantime, at least his non-living pieces sell well. Income from The Tipsy Whisker certainly helps too. Yes, the bar where he was born now falls to his care. With Connie handling the actual bartending, it's not so bad—Milo enjoys cleaning up and rearranging the spirits. Routine steadies him. Still, he hopes his parents return from their well-timed "vacation" sooner rather than later. |
