MERIT
"Ha, how time flies. Yes, we'll be married in a month. I must have forgotten to mention it."
Bottled Embers
Fool's Gold
Maple Leaf
Dried Flower Crown

Cat's Wing Fans

Merit carries herself like royalty, and she suits the part well. Even though she wears more casual clothing than fine dresses and silks, she stands tall, speaks clearly. There's a gleam in her eye, and every sentence she speaks can be taken two, three different ways. Even her insults are innocent on the surface, and one only may only realize that innocuous comment was backhanded hours later.

The only crown she wears is one of flowers. And yet, despite the aura she gives off, she fiercely rejects any implication that she may be different - much less greater - for her bloodline. She finds it darkly comedic, that her mother's influence has followed her even here. She has, certainly, been raised as if she were royalty. Perhaps she will never truly be free of it.

While elegant and pristine on the surface, peer a bit closer, and a different picture starts to emerge. Bitterness seeps through her every wayward comment, every word sly and cynical. But, of course, most do not look that closely. Most only see what they wish to, and Merit knows that fact all too well. She abuses it remorselessly, giving off the perfect image as to not arouse suspicion.

Except when the illusion shatters. But it so rarely shatters, so rarely that you could spend a lifetime with her and not see it, not unless she wants you to. The only hint something was wrong was the coffee-bitterness of her laugh, the too-sharp smile that crosses her muzzle. That was, until Merit's blasted heart fell in love with her.

Now, that complicated things. She had decided, early on in her life, to take a pureblood mate - not for any of that 'continuing a pure bloodline' nonsense, purely for practical reasons. Surely there were plenty of suitable candidates in that pool, and life would be easier without earning her parent's ire. And yet, the heart wants what it wants. And she wanted this fierce, brash, unsophisticated, wonderful little Mirror. Funny thing, that.

They dated in secret for years, until Merit left her birth clan, when Octavia guided her to Clan Lucerna. It's still quite strange to be able to date out in the open, and stranger still that no one here so much as lifts an eyebrow. It's a lot to grow used to, but Merit is getting there. Sometimes, even, her laugh doesn't have that coffee-bitter ring. Perhaps being here is doing some good for her.

Purebred Generation 4

Note from Mother

It has been very interesting watching you grow up within our clan. You know our expectations for you to carry on a clean lineage, and you have shown no resentment to the fact, and yet... I wonder about you. The reassurances you give are convincing enough, but where do you wander off to when the sun rises? "No where," you say, as if I would not question you further, but your answers never change. Your reassurances hide secrets, you are my daughter after all, and you did not get this gift for facade from your father. As you leave our clan, be mindful of who you choose to keep your secrets from. Not all will be so forgiving as your mother.

And remember your duty to produce a pure progeny.

She had always tested her limits, seen what she could hide behind her masquerade. It was both more and less than she'd thought. Perhaps it was love, in her mother's eyes, that she let Merit keep her secrets. She learned fast, because she had to. She would have ended up like her brother if she didn't.

Oh, her brother. Her foolish, gentle brother. He looked up at her, so lost as he tore his gaze away from his own note. How many times had he read it? "She hates us." He murmured, sounded so distant and broken. A dry laugh broke through Merit's maw. It was cruel, to laugh, but it was just too funny.

"No. Unfortunately, she loves us, in her own way."

Lies flowed so easily that she wasn't confident she could start speaking the truth again. She was less sure she even remembered what the truth was, anymore. Did it even matter? Her mother wanted reassurances, so she gave them. Her brother needed comfort, so she gave it. That was all words were good for, really.

He did not answer, so Merit continued. "She loves you, but she hates the things you are. Humble, and shy, and gentle."

"You're being too harsh, Merit." He chastised gently, though the note had him teary-eyed not a minute before. "She just wants me to stand up for myself. What's gotten into you tonight? I know it isn't easy to leave home, but you've never been so..." He paused, struggling to place the word. "... angry." No, that wasn't quite right, but it was close enough.

She sighed lightly, shaking her head. "Perhaps I am a little rattled from leaving home." She admitted, though she did not mean it. "Stick around with me for a little longer, if you wouldn't terribly mind. I don't believe I'm ready to say goodbye yet. Not to everyone."
