DEFINITELY NOT EXPENDABLE

This was the monster's first one-egg nest. From the way she paced, to the lack of correctly assimilated drones that week, the whole Hive knew she wouldn't like the outcome. When the lightly-rotted egg had hatched, she showed the slightest bit of motherly instinct, different from her first clutches. But...when the moon rose, she went berserk, slamming the hatchling into the walls of the Hive, decimating it. Claiming it wasn't as perfect as she was, as Epitome was. I'm not quite sure who 'Epitome' is, but something tells me I'll find out sooner rather than later.

Typically the monster's hatchlings stay with her until adulthood, and then she sends them off to make their own hives. But...not this time. Not this one.

This one nearly died that night, only fueled by the small amount of food it had been permitted to eat. I watched it scamper away, a little rat in the night. I hope the monster catches it, the less Consciousnesses in the world, the better.

Where am I?
Why is it so wet?
...Why did mommy do that?
...I'm so alone

You are not alone
Who are you?
I'm your...new mother...your...better mother. Tell you what, how'd you like to help me with something?

Error's Notes:

We have taken the one called DISGRACE from the clan he was infiltrating for WH-CON-255. That Consciousness knew he vanished within a day, though it was a while before she discovered it was we who took him. She was deeply unsettled to learn we had done so, and slipped everything she said on the wavelength to the clan she was targeting. So unsettled she had a breakdown. Her sister, LAPIS, took over the hive, and since then WH-CON-255 has taken back her pre-assimilation name, and has finally fled the hive.

As far as we are aware, DISGRACE is the offspring of SIS, EPITOME's sister, who rejected and attacked the child at hatch. WH-CON-255 acquired him after he escaped, and was using the child as a spy due to his damaged carapace not making him readily identifiable as Hive.

We had traveled there to find a way to strike at WH-CON-255, and we did, but that is no longer our primary goal with the acquisition of this Drone. DISGRACE is a sweet child, who does not understand what has happened to him, and meant no harm to the clan that tended him. Therefore, our goal is to keep him safe, and hopefully in an environment that fosters stability and happiness in the hatching.

We have reason to believe he will not attain significant size, we do not yet know if his mental development will be likewise stunted. Regardless, he deserves to be in a caring home, where he will be appreciated instead of used.

We will provide that home.
We will provide that care.
We will do better than the Hive.

The Hive
Chapter 3
Disgrace

Disgrace cried, as he was flown away from the Clan of Fallen Leaves. He hadn’t been there long, but they had been nice. Worse, he couldn’t hear Mommy anymore. What was he going to do? Could he get away? Would Mommy take him back now that the rules were broke? She had said it was a game, staying with the dragons, a special game and he wasn’t supposed to talk about her to them, those were the rules.

Error hadn’t played by the rules. The black coatl’s grip on him was tight, and her shoulder feathers tickled his nose. She had told Miss Widow about Mommy, and made it so he couldn’t tell. Something had happened, something inside his head, and where he used to hear Mommy, now he heard Error.

They were heading up, towards the surface, and even if he could wiggle loose there was no getting away. The big imperial, Talfir, was using magic so they could breath, fly in the water, and if Disgrace got loose he might drown. Even if he didn’t, there was the shadow-colored mirror and the metal shaded wildclaw. They were fast, and would probably catch him.

So he sagged, and cried, until he couldn’t cry anymore. When the got above the water, his ears perked up. It had been a long time, since he was over the water instead of under it. There were birds, and the sun was warm.

The group came down on the sand, near a stand of trees. “We will camp here, tonight, and make the rest of the trip in the morning.” Error made the statement without any inflection. She sat with him, while the others made a fire and cooked dinner.

When the blanket was removed from the pack the healer had put together for him, wrapped around his shoulders, he wasn’t really paying attention. He ate what was put in front of him without appetite. Where were they taking him? What would happen when he was there?

When Error lifted him again, he squeaked startelement. She carried him over by Talfir, and settled against the mage with him in her lap. A moment of confusion, and he was seeing the Wavelength, an overlay of communication with the Hivemind, but he couldn’t access it. Was, was Error showing him it? Why? He had gone there once or twice to talk, but never like this.

Disgrace stiffened, that, that was Mommy, wasn’t it? WH-CON-255, that was her typing. Asking, asking if anyone had seen him? Was she worried? Was-

What? Not concerning? Hadn’t told him much? “I don’t understand.”

Error’s voice was soft. “You will, and will wish you had not.” Slowly she scrolled through old conversations, showed him WH-CON-255’s logged history.

Mommy...wasn’t very nice. Mommy was actually, kind of bad. Maybe, maybe he didn’t want her as his mommy after all. She might be as mean as his first one.

Only, “you make her mad on purpose.”

“We do.”

“Why?”

Error let go of the wavelength, looked down at him. “Because it proves she is not perfect, the hive is not perfect. It shows they are as flawed as the dragons they claim superiority to.” Her crest feathers lowered. “We do not like being told what to do. We do not like being told to take that choice from others. We know that you have not had a choice, and we are sorry about that. We will try to give you more options in the future.”

Disgrace wasn’t sure what to do, but he was very tired, and maybe he could close his eyes, and think about it later.

In the morning he was quiet, and didn’t fuss when Error picked him up after breakfast to start flying. He looked around, as they passed over the beach, and into the scarred wasteland.

The ground looked hard, the small trees withered and twisted, except when it was swampy and thick. They were flying high above, but he could just see the small herds of cerede and hear the chorus of croakers when they passed by the mire.

When Error started losing height, he got a glimpse of a large compound in a crater, with what was either a very large pond or a small lake. There was a lot of green, and as the dragons landed in a large stone plaza he blinked. This, this was plague land, but, there were a lot of flowers and vines on the edges of the buildings. Actually, it was very colorful, with bright banners hanging from bone and antler hooks all over.

Error set him down. “You will come with us, to our home. Do not run off.” She turned to the others, muttered thanks and asked a few hard-to-hear questions, and started walking.

Disgrace blinked at her. Where would he go? He didn’t know where anything was. So, he followed next to her as she wound her way from the landing area up the terraced pathway. There were lots of flowerbeds, and little fountains with fish inside.

The came to a large building, with a sign out front with a picture of a wrench on it. Error paused, and then lead him around back, to a smaller building with ivy all over it. She opened the door, and waited for him to go through.

Inside, Disgrace’s claws clicked on tile, and he blinked. There were lots of padded cushions around a low table to one side, a metal stove and stone counter to the other, and a drone on the ceiling.

It looked at them, lapis carapace bright. A mirror, it’s four green eyes blinked, a pale web marking over its face making them seem extra dark. It chittered at them, head cocked.
“WELCOME BACK, USER ERROR.”

Error glanced up at it. “LapOne, where is Gesla?”

“USER GESLA IS EN ROUTE FROM THE WORKSHOP, WE ALERTED HER TO YOUR RETURN.” It turned its gaze to Disgrace. “WELCOME UNKNOWN USER. MAY WE HAVE YOUR DESIGNATION?”

He wasn’t sure about answering, but, it would be rude not to, wouldn't it? “I...I’m Disgrace.”

“USER DISGRACE, YOU HAVE BEEN LOGGED WITH THE WORKSHOP DRONES. PLEASE ENJOY YOUR STAY.”

A noise, like a door opening “What’s that?” A while coatl walked in, splashes of a purplish color on what might be carapace, but it looked too soft. She had a bright smile. “Welcome home, Error, who is your friend?”

Error’s tone was low. “This is Disgrace, Mother.” She turned to him. “This is Gesla, she is the consciousness for the drones here.”

Gesla walked closer, feathered crest spread, though she lowered her head so it was almost the same level as his. “Welcome to our home, Disgrace. Would you like some tea? I was just about to make dinner.”

His stomach growled, reminding him he hadn’t had anything to eat since breakfast. “Yes, please?”

Error spoke up. “Expect visitors, I sent word with the others.”

Gesla nodded, though her attention was on Disgrace. “Here, why don’t you have a seat at the table, and I’ll get you some tea and a snack to tide you over till the meal is ready.” She walked him over to one of the cushions, and set a teacup in front of him. It was soon joined by some crackers, and while he could hear Gesla and Error talking in the kitchen he couldn’t really hear it over the crunchy sounds of eating.

They were tasty, and he spent a few moment trying to get crumbs off his whiskers when there was a knock at the door. Gesla opened it, and invited two dragons in. “Saroi, Rea, thank you for coming by, will you stay for dinner?”

“If you’ll have us,” answered Rea, an azure skydancer carrying a large box. “I think we brought everything requested.”

Beside her, an obsidian mirror was likewise burdened with a bulging pack. “You know I never turn down dinner I don’t have to cook. Now, I do believe I have some official Clan Chief work to do.” Those red eyes settled on Disgrace, and he walked over with a wide smile. “Hello. I’m Saroi, welcome to the Warband.”

Disgrace’s ears were low, wings shifting. “Hullo.” The man seemed friendly, but these were dragons, and weren’t they not supposed to know about the hive? But, that lapis drone was still on the ceiling? “I’m Disgrace.”

“An unusual name,” Saroi said. “So, I’ve been told you’re going to be staying with us. I’m glad to have you, even though I know it’s a little complicated.”

He stared into his tea. “I didn’t want to leave.”

The chief’s tone was soft, as he set down the pack and sat on the cushion next to him. “I understand. It’s hard, when you have to leave a place you like, and people you like. But, sometimes new places can be good, and you can make new friends. I promise that we will all take good care of you, for as long as you’re here.”

Disgrace looked up at him, tears in his eyes. “But, you don’t know me.”

“I would like to. Can you and I be friends, Disgrace?” Saroi smiled. “I brought something, in the hopes of making a new friend. Would you like to see it?”

He nodded, though it all seemed strange. When the chief pulled a soft doll out of the pack, offered it, Disgrace forgot all about being worried. “It’s so red!” He took it, surprised at the soft suede. “What is it?” It looked like a dragon, but not any kind he had seen.

“It’s the Plaguebringer,” Saroi said. “I thought she might bring you a little luck, and help you settle in.”

A dragon god. “But, I’m not…”

Saroi spoke gently. “The Plaguebringer, and so the Plague flight, celebrate those who survive. You have survived much in your short life, and so you are exactly the kind of person she likes. Besides, your eyes say you were born in the Scarred Wasteland, so surely she welcomes you home.”

Home. Was this home? It didn’t feel like it yet, but, could it be? The mirror sounded so certain, so calm. Maybe it could.

Rea snorted, coming to sit at the table. “We brought a bed, and more toys than just her, along with some books and things. Error says you’re staying with her, but you are welcome through the whole lair. Crackle in particular is hoping you visit his gardens, he’s a Pup Scouts leader if you’re interested.”

“That,” Disgrace wasn’t sure what to say. “That sounds nice.” It did, and when dinner was ready he ate a great deal, and talked to Ms. Gesla, who was very nice. Staying here, didn’t seem so bad, and maybe he wasn’t alone, maybe he was making new friends.

Holding the plush doll close, maybe the Plaguebringer was bringing him luck.
