Biography
THE COUNCIL OF FIVE
The Freefloating City, home to the Freeflight Clan, is tethered to the Reedcleft Ascent near the Twisting Crescendo. Home to dragons of many types, sizes and cultures, it is a buzzing hive of activity. The balloons, air ships and fans of the city are surmounted by the impressive Council Ship; a meeting place for the Council of Five, who advise Kokiri Clan-Mother in the running of the Clan.

WIP 6-2-2019 Knakurr’s story is not a good one, or even a sane one. Plagued with misfortune since his hatching in the Wandering Contagion, this Spiral has grown into what some would call an evil dragon. His entire life could be labeled as under “mysterious circumstances,” and even today he doesn’t trust any dragon as far as he can throw them. Hatching His egg seemed innocent enough, resting as it did in a bolt-hole of a hoard amidst an endless sea of eggs. It was a Lightning egg, and therefore sparking with an inner energy, but that wasn’t unlike the hundreds of other Lightning eggs mixed in with the thousands of dragon eggs. This was to be the hatching of all hatchings; more than three thousand eggs presented to the Plaguebringer. It happened slowly at first; one by one, the eggs began to shake. The tappings of thousands of little beaks scratching at the inside of their shells, itself usually a relatively small sound, grew to fill the air with a buzz of energy. The caretakers of the Plague Clan collected the tiny bundles of sticky legs and feet and wings and took them away, later to be presented to the Plaguebringer or sold to the highest bidder. When eventually this particular egg cracked open, every dragon took a startled step backwards. While plenty of many eyed dragons had hatched since the Bounty of the Elements took place, and his colors were yet still muted, the striking reds and blues contrasting with his sparking Lightning eyes astonished many. It being a Plague Clan, some thought him cursed; others sought to claim him in a barely civil bidding war. Meanwhile, Kokiri Clan-Mother of the Freeflight Clan was not unaware of the mass hatching ongoing in the lands bordering hers. She sent Skada, Plague Ambassador, to investigate. He collected many hatchlings to bring home with him, but Knakurr he took a special interest in. Brief Summary: Knakurr was always a bit of an odd duck. Hatched under mysterious circumstances in a faraway lair, his unusual looks caused all the decent dragons in the clan to avoid him, and all the nasty sorts to fight over him. Eventually he was saved from that mess and taken to the Freeflight Clan, where his savior thought he would have a decent shot at the world. But alas, his savior was murdered in a fit of revenge from one of the nasty dragons Knakurr had been stolen from, leaving Knakurr alone in an unfamiliar Clan. Adolescence At the time, the Freeflight Clan lived in tents and caves on the Windswept Plains. The young Spiral was safe enough, but he was scarred from his rough upbringing, and avoided most dragons. He hid during the day and was active at night, catching the bugs and whatnot he needed to survive. Alone in the midst of a clan full of dragons, Knakurr got lost in his thoughts. His limited experiences of the world were with dragons who either reviled him, or wanted to control him, with the singular shining exception being his late savior. He became a bit cracked, as you will when your only company is yourself, summing up the situation to be far worse than it actually was. Eventually, hard as it was, Knakurr began socializing with the dragons of the Freeflight Clan. There was Kerrain, the Spymaster, who knew the instant Knakurr touched ground on Freeflight land; Coriander, the General, who caught him stealing for food and other essentials a few times, and punished him for it; Ferlaetis, the Dancer, who danced in the light of Narcheska’s firefly lanterns while Knakurr watched from the shadows. Taking Flight Eventually, the day came when Shida, the Architect, finished her grand Project and the Freeflight Clan took to the skies in what would become the Freefloating City. They shed their tents and caverns for gaily colored hot air balloons and airships, powered by steam turbines, sails and fans. Each individual airship and balloon was hooked to each other with an intricate series of ropework, and the whole was tethered to the ground in massive rope anchors, each thicker around than Knakurr’s waist. Knakurr, as of yet still living outside society and therefore not privy to the news of the upcoming Project, was taken quite by surprise. In his panic, he tried to stow away on a ship and not be left behind. But that’s when Kerrain played his hand; hidden in the chaos of the balloons and dirigibles taking flight, the Spymaster struck, finally sending Knakurr to live in the Underthing. The Underthing The Underthing: a place of everlasting, unchanging darkness. Even here, miles beneath the surface of Sornieth’s most vaunted plains, the wind reaches into the corners of the world. It travels deep through cracks in the earth, making up the only sound in the drafty caverns—an incessant whine of air whipping through the jagged edges of natural stone. There is no source of light, none at all, and the air drips with a black drape of depression. A sensation of isolation, fear and entrapment hangs on every moment wasting away in this prison underground. As far as any dragon living here knows, no one has ever escaped. And no one will escape. It is not a thing to be contemplated, as the pressing darkness destroys any possible hope of change—or indeed, belief in the Overworld itself. The only exception to the whining sound of the wind was that of the other dragons; trapped, as Knakurr was, in eternal darkness. Mostly large Imperial males, he at first avoided the other dragons. Having lived his entire life with a clear knowledge of what was going on around him, thanks to his many eyes, the darkness was to Knakurr an even worse kind of torture. As the hours dragged into weeks, and then into months, Knakurr’s mind finally cracked for good. This was to be his Anvil; the Underthing, the hammer that forged him anew. In his madness, Knakurr is all smiles and deceptive kindness. In the Anvil, he coerced the other Imperials into favoring him. He manipulated them into hating each other and loving him; except of course for Tangoroa, whose only concern was food. Soon the sounds of Imperials fighting and Knakurr’s cackling laughter was in addition to the whining wind. But this wasn’t enough for Knakurr. He soon tracked down the source of the wind, tiny cracks in the solid stone. But while the stone walls were prison enough for the enormous Imperials, Knakurr is a Spiral, perfectly suited for tunneling through the ground. He wormed his way to the surface, where he found a moonless night in full swing. Breathing fresh air for the first time in months, the Spiral let his eyes adjust, and then took flight. He flew slightly drunkenly, out of practice and half blind, still reeling in the shock of having his sight restored. By the time he reached the Freefloating City, floating gently in the wind, he had better control and furtively snuck around the City, peering in windows and getting a feel for the place. He avoided all contact with dragons as he went, and eventually spotted above everything else, the Council Ship. He found Kerrain there, by himself, studying at a desk. Knakurr snuck up behind him, and then wrapped himself around the Pearlcatcher. Holding Kerrain in a stranglehold, Knakurr spared him in an act of both mercy and cruelty. He deposed Knakurr outside, leaving him to fend for himself on a deck a few levels down, and promptly took over his role as a member of the Council. |
PERSONALITY
|
Knakurr is all smiles and deceptive kindness. The face he shows the clan is kindness and loyalty, but his other side is cruel, hateful and demeaning. Most things in life amuse him, so his smile might actually be genuine as he's throwing you out to the harpies--literally or figuratively. He's a bit of a wildcard. Hoards an endless supply of eye drops. Nocturnal, mostly active in the night time. Eyesight is moderate at best, but has +360 degree vision of the area around him. If he's really feeling intense, he'll twist into a knot so he's glaring at you with all his eyes at once No one really knows how many eyes Knakurr has, because he never stops moving to let you count! |

Relaxing at his place on the Council Ship's council table, Knakurr narrows his eyes at you. His face relaxes into a reassuring smile...but the edges of his grin seems just a little too wide, showing just a few too many teeth.
"Oh, I wouldn't worry about it too much if I were you," the resplendant Spiral drawls. "Our dear mother is far too important for the likes of you or I to bother her; I'll just take care of the little things that don't concern her matronliness."
