Malay: Between Worlds

"Rosa is... hesitant to ask such a thing, but she must."

~~~
The shadowed figure to which she spoke looked down at the little bundle of blankets to her side. Within, a four-day-old pearlcatcher hatchling was nestled, curled around a pearl not much bigger than an apple. He didn't know much about the pearls that gave the breed their name, but he knew that this one -- both the pearl and the hatchling that carried it -- was abnormally small.
Rosa had done a good job at hiding the weight of her request, loosely swaddling the child in far more blankets than were necessary, possibly to hide the fact that the hatchling was shivering.
It didn't work.
He could smell the sickness from where he stood.
~~~
"Rosa..."
"Thistledown, please."

~~~
Thistledown growled in frustration, but relented with a sigh. He could see her desperation, and he knew that Rosa was always the last dragon to cause a fuss. Especially for her friends. He had almost certainly been her last choice to seek help from.
~~~

"Look, as far as I know my powers can't even be passed on. Are you willing to risk that?"

~~~
"Rosa is willing to take a chance for her own child."
~~~

The sudden bitterness and hostility in her voice was uncharacteristic, but it only lasted for a moment before she relaxed and looked ashamed of herself.

Thistledown hesitated for a moment, but reached down and picked up the little bundle, sitting back as he cradled the child in his arms. The blankets were pulled back just enough to show the hatchling's face, no more, but at such a short distance he could clearly see and feel the little one's shaking.
The child's pained grimace turned to wonder as it took in the unfamiliar details of his face, blue eyes wide with curiosity. He returned the expression with a sad smile of his own, clutching the bundle -- child and all -- close to his chest.

~~~
"What... what's its name..?"
He was hesitant to ask the question, unwilling to learn too many of the details.
"Her name is Malay. Rosa named her Malay Lacewing."
~~~

He paused for a second, having genuinely forgotten that Rosa's family didn't pass down last names, instead granting a new and unique name to each individual.

From within the bundle of blankets she was swaddled with, he heard the child whine softly to itself for a few seconds, before letting out a loud wail of discomfort. Rosa flinched at the sound, but Thistledown felt a strange stirring in his chest.

Dammit.

He was already getting attached.

~~~
"Fine. I'll do it, Rosa. She's a beautiful child. I'll do what I can.
...Even if that just means keep her company."
~~~

He hadn't noticed the tears in her eyes. But as he accepted, she almost jumped with joy before settling down. Bowing her head respectfully, she leaned down and rested her chin on his head.

~~~
"Thistledown... Rosa is so grateful."
~~~

He smiled, but the laugh that left his lips was empty.
Didn't she realise he was stealing her child away from any chance of spending its last hours by its mother's side?
Didn't she realise what it truly meant to walk between worlds, that vulnerable in-between place where angry spirits and shade-twisted beasts could destroy a soul forever?

"I'm not a miracle worker!" part of him wanted to scream.
"I'm an abomination! I'm just going to fail you, and then what?!"

...ah, but that would be parroting back self-doubts, words not his own.

~~~
"Please Rosa... don't be."
~~~

~~~~~
"Malay Lacewing if you don't get your tail back here right now I will ground you to the Border Ethereal so fast!"
Malay looked back for a moment to where her father figure, Thistledown, stood angrily. He had a dagger drawn, and he was baring his fangs more as a defensive show of force than due to his agitation.
She had always found him a little hard to take seriously with his goggles on, though, even if she knew how important they could be.
Turning back to the focus of her attention, Malay pushed her own goggles down over her eyes, staining her vision the faintest shade of pink.
She had never seen a Reaper spirit up this close before. Although she had seen countless numbers of them from a distance when she was a small child, usually obscured by Thistledown's wings as he grabbed her and took off running.
But she was older now.
She could take care of herself, even if he couldn't see that.
This particular Reaper was in the form of a male Wildclaw. Blue light shimmered beneath its dark scales, like starlight flowing from its form. Empty white eyes, glowing with that same blue power, stared ominously into the distance, scanning the horizon in a clear and methodical manner.
While not every Reaper actually carried a scythe as its weapon of choice, with things like battleaxes and swords being more common, this one had the classic tool.
"Malay, I'm serious, get back here now! That thing is dangerous!" Thistledown hissed, standing upright so as to seem larger than he actually was.
Head down, teeth bared; wings flared out, tail lashing--
Thistledown could be scary when he wanted to be.
But she was transfixed by the appearance of this ethereal creature.
TBC
Notes:
  • Was very sickly and almost certainly going to die as a small child
  • Still has an abnormally small pearl, and is small for a Pearlcatcher (closer to 3m than her listed size)
  • Has a very weak immune system and can't physically touch Plague flight dragons in the mortal world for risk of getting critically ill.
  • Does not know her biological father
  • Bilingual speaker of both common draconic & the native tongue of House Huaki (Thistle speaks it a little too much around her)
  • Fluently switches in and out of 3rd person wording depending on whether she's talking to her mother or not
  • Calls Thistledown "dad" but doesn't think of him as her real father
  • Has brutal scars running down her sides, parallel to her ribs. It's unclear how, as they aren't from her childhood illness and she's never been attacked by Reapers.
  • As far as she cares, Thistledown has 5 children.
