"Doesn't it make your Blood
Run Cold with Joy?" Determined to learn, Talitha begged the aid of the Ice dragon Fargentis. The two Imperials could often be seen, after the duties of the day were done, curled around each other in the back of the lair, talking, or diving together to freeze the water around them. When Fargentis left, returning to the Southern Icefields where she had hatched, Talitha inherited her role as the clan's Ice Mage. For a long time, she attempted to step into her mentor's shoes as much as physically possible - bringing cold winds from the South on boiling days with intricate aerial displays, for example, or creating ice fields of the kelp forests beneath the lair - but she simply could not work as Fargentis had. Though it took some time (and more than a few heartwarming speeches from her clanmates) Talitha came to embrace that she was water-born. Perhaps she would never have the easy grace of Fargentis's ice skills, but the magic welled up in her far more readily. The acceptance changed her spells, too; she started allowing herself to think of ice as frozen water, as a stable moment of the Sea, as opposed to the elemental force Fargentis had always spoken of. She could shape it, give it form, give it purpose. She could sculpt, she could solidify, and, to her delight, she could make it snow, though the tropical waters of the Sea aren't exactly suited for it. On days of celebration, Talitha often creates great ice structures, stretching up into the sky, and glittering with a thousand myriad colours as they melt in the sun. She'd never call herself an artist, not really, but it gives her some pleasure to see them there. And if, when they melt, she forms them into snowballs to hurl at her unsuspecting clanmates, well. They shouldn't have stolen her fish, then, should they? |
