It’s surface was as smooth and shiny as porcelain. A perfect spiral that swirled to a round tip. Pinks and creamy hues striped its sides, like a delicate twist of strawberry sauce and caramel in ice cream. Procella couldn’t stop staring at it. She reached her claws underwater, only for it to move away. Procella was distracted momentarily by the sparkle of caustic light, but refocused on her prize. The shell’s inhabitant responded by scuttling away faster in fear. Smirking, she snatched it from its spot, sand sifting through her claws. The hermit crab refused to let go, tucking itself back into the shell. Procella gripped its claw and started pulling. Its mottled purple body was revealed, and she held back a shiver of disgust as it’s soft body dangled from her claws. She tossed the creature into the waves and eyed her finding in glee. The crab disappeared in a small splash and the blue waves sparkled as bright and beautiful as always. Procella loved the ocean - it was so dazzling, so pretty and perfect, just like her.
She gazed at her reflection: the deep blue of her scales, the way it caught the sunlight, the yellow highlights on her wings - the definition of perfection. She placed the shell at her neck, where her growing collection was proudly flaunted. She shifted from side to side, grinning as she saw it sparkle amongst her scales. A ripple interrupted her reflection and she waited impatiently for it to subside.
Instead, more ripples disturbed the surface, growing into a churning crescendo. Procella scrambled away, but before she could stretch her wings to the sky, a wave engulfed her. The sand that cushioned her feet had all but vanished, leaving her kicking uselessly against deep water. A current pulled her down, dragging her against the jagged husks of bleached coral. Her claws scraped against them - a futile attempt - as she was sucked down into the depths. Before all the light above dwindled away as she sunk, she cried at the scratches and bruises that ruined her splendid scales. Then all she saw was black.
