From a young age, Anaïs suffered from vicious, terrifying nightmares. Alestra was ecstatic with her daughter, believing Anaïs' self-induced nightmares to be a sign of her inherit Nightcaller abilities, however small a start. As Anaïs grew up, however, she never developed any further, and it became clear that she would not possess that terrifying, nightmarish magic that was first passed down by her grandfather, Melinoe. Alestra lost her interest with Anaïs after that, and with a reclusive father like Rudyard, Anaïs suffered alone with her night terrors.
After Anaïs came to accept this sleeping torment as her fate, she later realized that her nightmares, which were once meaningless to her (but no less maddening), began to have relevance in the waking world. Dream by dream, she began to see events take place, sometimes before they even happened. However, no matter who or what the subject of these "nightmares" were, there was always one reoccurring theme: Anaïs only ever saw death. Envisioning the demise of all her clanmates, Anaïs was desperate enough to leave her clan of the Purring Winds. She felt she needs to escape from her family and her Nightcall lineage, which was suffocating her. For a while, her sleep was quiet. But as fate would have it, when Anaïs was passing through the Thousand Current Sea, she met Nile, a warlord from the Abyssal Clan. Despite not knowing him, the first nightmare she had was of him. Something about Nile's death impacted her more than the others that she'd dream of. Anaïs knew, then- she would do everything in her power to prevent his demise. |
