Biography

Cove
Siren of Redrock Cove

tumblr_ofgcss4Fy01tddvg0o2_640.png
The beaches of Redrock Cove are one of the more tranquil places on Sornieth, untouched by all except for the occasional bands of treasure-hunting beastclans or dragons. They come looking to scavenge riches washed up by the ocean, and many even leave with as many treasures as they can carry. But no more than that. While it might be tempting to sail a ship into the cove with a few friends and loot everything for yourselves, the wise know that to be nothing but a fool’s errand. Any ship that brashly intrudes upon the cove’s waters disappears, led to its doom by the Siren of Redrock Cove. The siren holds no mercy for those who disturb her ocean, and the crew of such a reckless ship will never see the light of day again. But she cares not for treasure, and the ship’s cargo will turn up one day as part of the cove’s bounty, plundered by treasure hunters who show a tad more respect for the siren’s domain.

As for the siren herself, well, she isn’t actually a siren. As a matter of fact, she works very hard to make sure that no real sirens infringe on her territory. It would be incredibly tragic if someone else sunk a ship without giving Cove a chance to check if her daughter is somewhere on board. Not because of the ship ending up on the bottom of the ocean (that would happen regardless), and not even because there’d be the chance of her daughter drowning (Cove would save her before that happened). No, it’d be very tragic for the one who sunk the ship, who’d find themselves with only a few seconds to think about what they’d done before being buried in a pile of rocks on the ocean floor.

From a rocky costal cave Cove spends her days fuming in anger, waiting for the day she’ll be able to take her revenge. It can’t have been more than a year or two ago, but to her it feels like an eternity. She was spending a nice day out with her daughter, who was busy tripping over her own wings attempting to mimic crabs scuttling along the shore. Nothing could have ruined such a beautiful day, apart from an invasion by the shade itself, with its endlessly hungry, magic-consuming darkness that consistently features in Sornieth’s Top 10 Most Effective Day-Ruiners lists. Luckily, Cove wasn’t going to have to deal with that.Unfortunately, what was approaching was the Pearly Shell, the ship of the fearsome pirate Hellbeard, who looking to grab a few more hatchlings to raise as members of his crew (and who placed a respectable sixteenth place in the extended version of the day-ruiners list).

Cove was outnumbered ten to one, but she wasn’t going to go down without a fight. Thinking quickly, she took her best guess at which wildclaw was the captain and began to mimic them. The pirates wouldn’t expect her to use their own moves against them!

Sadly, Cove’s mimicking instincts were a bit too powerful. The pirates were busy kidnapping her daughter, and so she copied that. To Cove’s credit, the pirates definitely didn’t expect Cove to help them. So that’s one half of her plan that worked. But it wasn’t until she was waving the leaving ship goodbye as it disappeared over the horizon that Cove realized just how badly she’d messed the other half up. Those pirates wouldn’t know how to raise her child! They’d cause her to grow up to be rude and uncouth, completely ignorant of the wisdom and traditions of the Earth flight. Worse, as a nocturne, she’d pick up that absurd pirate accent, and then nobody would take her seriously. Cove was going to have to rescue her.

But Cove has no idea where the pirates would have gone. As such, since that day Cove has stalked the skies above Redrock Cove, waiting for the day those pirates inevitably return. Whenever any ship approaches the cove, Cove sings an old song that she once sang to her daughter, who she knows will recognize it immediately. The somber melody echoes across the cove, alighting fear in the hearts of any who have heard of the siren’s legend. Should her daughter not be on the ship, Cove won’t even bother to show her face. Her earth magic empowered by her anger, every ship so far has been sunk by stone spikes surging from the seafloor, tearing their hulls to shreds. The lucky ones are impaled instantly, while the rest find themselves buried under an avalanche of rocks at the bottom of the ocean.

When Cove does find her daughter, she plans to swoop down and whisk her away to safety, back to a life completely free of pirates. Then she’ll come back and sink the pirate ship, because that’s what pirate deserve. All the other boats deserved it as well. If they weren’t treacherous ne’er-do-wells, then why were they hiding behind wooden boards out on the ocean? Those with nothing to hide should be up in the sky, where truth and goodness flows freely. Not one soul who chooses to cower in the hold of ship will be safe from Cove’s wrath until her daughter is saved from the awful influence of pirates. So until then, the Siren of Redrock Cove will continue to haunt the shores of her cove, and her song will be the last thing any sailors hear.
