K A L T A N unfailing • dreamwalker • unyielding «- - - - - - - - - - - - - ❖ - - - - - - - - - - - - -» Every night, the same ritual. Kaltan sees those eyes in the corner of his vision every time he Walks-- eyes that never seem to blink, so brown they are almost black. They watch as he does his work hunting down nightmares and chasing down hallucinations, and they watch still as he coaxes tender dreams from the dark to bring in the dawn. He's been a dreamwalker for as long as he can remember. As far as he knows, no one ever sees him work, least of all the dreamer. So, who does this mysterious gaze belong to? It is a phenomenon he is unfamiliar with. Having discovered his ability to step into the slumbering minds of other dragons when he slept when he was little more than a hatchling, Kaltan took this as a sign that he was meant for something greater than filling the seat of a throne he did not want. So what if royal blood flowed through his veins? He ran away one night, discarded his name for the one he wears now, and has never looked back since. Nothing else has fazed him this much since the night he perched on the outermost castle wall, wondering at the darkness beyond. Those eyes haunt him in his sleep. One night, he gets his answer. The bright Sorineth sun is only just setting when he falls asleep and steps into what feels like another nightmare-- he never recognises the dragons whose dreams he intrudes on, but he knows what pleasant dreams and their opposites feel like-- except... stranger. Kaltan finds himself in a dark room, a circle of light illuminating a bed beneath. There's a thin, translucent veil hanging over the bed, and its occupant is a dark shadow behind. A cool breeze gusts over his scales, and he shudders involuntarily as he steps closer. Somehow, something doesn't feel right. As he pulls back the veil, he pinpoints the feeling. That brown-eyed gaze that'd always been omnipresent while he worked is now gone. Kaltan can't feel any eyes on his back, any curiosity over his shoulder. If anything, he feels a little... alone. He turns his attention towards the sleeper in the bed. It's a pearlcatcher, with patterned scales of gold and coal and wings of the darkest red. She looks so peaceful, he cannot help but think. What could possibly be the nightmare here-- The pearlcatcher's eyes snap open. Kaltan's heart nearly stops in his chest. Those eyes. Up close and in the light, Kaltan is reminded of fire agate when he stares back. 'You.' He breathes, reverent and disbelieving. He sees the defiant tilt of her jaw as she replies evenly, 'Yes.' And then she reaches forward, claw closing around his arm. His first instinct is to jerk away, but her grip is soft. She sits up, gaze boring into his, and through gritted teeth she says: 'Find me.'
